Watching Black Clover and rewatching FMA Brotherhood, it's been a while since I've watched it so I'm going back to it since it's one of my favorites.

Digimon Tamers and Frontier are, imo, the stronger seasons. Adventure and 02 are pretty great too though, I recommend Tri after both Adventures also.

this ended up being longer than i thought whoops; no real point here lmao just a ton of JBA love

I've been in the process of writing a big, gooey post about how much I love JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURES for a few days now, and definitely want to thank all the people who nudged me towards this show, especially Karina! <333

I just started the first few episodes of JBA: Stardust Crusaders, so definitely going to include spoilers up to that point! Save yourself and watch the show if reading this - it's soooo good! I'm high key obsessed with it right now!

Starting with first impressions, from the very beginning of the show! For one, I was like, WHY IS EVERYONE IN THE SHAPE OF AN MMA FIGHTER? The superhero proportions are so real on this show! Yet at the same time, there's effeminate physical and emotional features shaping all of our characters, too! Dio will be described later on as "sensual," and our lovely men are always wearing clothes that I would say aren't typically traditional of men! Some examples here, because I really love the fashion and aesthetic of this show, and the pure artwork that goes into everyone's designs! I'll need a whole separate post on P O S E S but for now we have this!

    Spoiler:

^ h o l y when you tryna be out here, rocking the crop tops, AND THEN JONATHAN JOESTAR SHOWS U UP

^ OKAY BUT ACTUALLY CAESAR TOO what the heck

There's always something very special happening with the artwork on this show! The outfits are lovingly put together with colors that convey characters' characteristics. Caesar is spunky and rambunctious like his banana would suggest; solid earth tones fit Joseph perfectly, partially because he's so grounded himself, partially because it fits the "average American boy" trope I think his character inherently strives for. Jotaro rocks the black leather, hat torn in two, like the little punk he is! I could gush for hours about how I love when the colors invert when the characters are in a dark or precarious situation; I love the sound effects in the bright, colorful font that comes up at the top of the screen! Colors have a tremendous way of shaping scenes in this show and I really appreciate it so much!

MOVING INTO actual plot! To be honest, I had no idea where this show would start, and even now I have no idea where it'll end! When we began in latter 1860s in England, I was like, "oh okay! Cool? Weird?" I haven't seen a historical anime if ever! And then VAMPIRES show up, and I'm like, WHAT?! This is about vampires and hunting them down?! The story starts off so poignantly on a rivalry between ~ brothers ~, I don't think I could have ever been prepared for it! I also can't believe, looking back, that part one is only 9 episodes! They rush by in a flash, and do such an exceptional job of setting up the whole trajectory of the show that I'm still in shock by it!

The beginning of the show shook me! I was both disturbed and unsure when to laugh, laughing, and simultaneously cocking my head and saying no way Jonathan just fell for that! I was high key SUPER UPSET about Danny and also a bit dubious about the "I'm going to kill your father and take over your fortune plot" BUT THEN?! I know the moment that I truly fell in love with the show! In episode 6, JoJo receives a sword engraved with PLUCK and the "inspirational moment" he took to get there was just so incredibly irrelevant to the moment at hand - "remember that time Danny didn't want to play with the bone, so you didn't play with him and he came back to be your friend?" - that I knew I loved this show!

Something I love about this show is its insane tone control. One moment, you're rolling out of your seat with laughter, cheering JoJo on, and in another moment you're crying! It's so intense! I'm not even sure how JBA manages to do it - but one moment, I'm on the edge of my seat because Lisa Lisa's down, and the next moment, I'm bawling in joy cause Kars ~Cars~ is playing her leg like a guitar and looks like the rockstar he's named after! This follows one of the most epic and creative chariot races / fights I've ever seen in my life, which proceeded the saddest character death that I'm still not over a whole season later. You never really expect what'll happen next when it comes to emotions or character arcs in this show!

THE CHARACTERS THEMSELVES <3 NAMELY THE JOESTARS

When I realized what this show was really going to be about - a family line and their journey to solve questions and shut out darkness - I really became so hooked. The concept is so good! When we had our first time skip, I really leaped out of my seat! The characters are located in their historical contexts - and that's why it's so entertaining to see a cantankerous Joseph complaining about the Japanese tea room (hot COLA?!) or to find Jotaro skipping school, because he actually has the opportunity to attend school in his historical context. They fit perfectly where they are, and they interact as much with the time period in the story as the time period does with them - to see that integrated so well, a real world in an anime, absolutely mesmerizes me!

and yes, I'm okay with how "the Germans used astronomy and alchemy to fight WWII" rofl

but WOW! Man, each JoJo is so perfect. There's a thin string connecting them I think - the arc towards good combined with that six-foot-four frame! Sure, Joseph will trick his way to good with his ~ clacker blue ~ balls and Jotaro's going to "ORAORAORA" his way there with a scowl, but it does the trick! They're all such complex yet intimately connected characters, and to hear Joseph say, "that's my grandson!" really breaks my heart in the best way possible. I was shaking on the edge of my seat watching Joseph's fight with Kars, so sure he wouldn't have made it out alive! He is, no doubt at this point, my favorite Joestar! When he's on the screen nowadays, I'm like, "wow, dad is so great" and I shake myself thinking, HOW did I get like this?!

    but this is how!

    Spoiler:

    Spoiler:

cause really why not just go to Mexico!

    Spoiler:

    golden heart son

    Spoiler:

best dad tbh - "i might die in a month, but the more pressing issue is that I just married two men"

In so many ways, Jotaro's the polar opposite to Jonathan. He's impolite, a pure delinquent, couldn't care less about pleasing his mom! That's why it also feels so fitting for him to have to take a literal (ha) stand against the evil that his ancestor of a full century ago had to face. All of the Joestars, in a very special and unique way, tell a tale about growing up in adversity and I'm excited to see Jotaro tackle it with his subtle grit and powerful resentment.

    AN HONORABLE MENTION JOESTAR:

    Spoiler:

so perfect one spoiler can't contain tbh

    Spoiler:

UGH I LOVE HER TO NO END

I'M UPSET SHE GOT FRIDGED FOR HER SON'S EPIC MOMENT BUT ALSO SHE HERSELF IS SO EPIC I'M NOT REALLY MAD

    her background is soooooo good
"yo they murdered my boo so I murdered some people in return, and that's why I couldn't raise you my golden child"
    ugh MAN

she really showed up for her fight with Kars in sunglasses and black gloves like she just came outta that Neon Indian video and she STILL SLAYED as long as she could!

The posing is really good on this show.

So good. It's magnetic. It's legendary. It's fierce. I heard about the memes before watching but I'm now a believer. To me, it resonates with a feminizing of the characters, in such a way that they... almost become accessible or relatable to me as a girl watching the show. And it does more than that that I can't even explain. It's funny but also makes you crank ya head like /what/ is this a power up, a celebration of the human body and ur good health, whomst gonna get pummeled today by our hamon warriors?? IDK WHAT THE PSYCHOLOGY EVEN IS HERE BUT IT'S SO GOOD:

    Spoiler:

    Spoiler:

    GETTIN REAL INTENSE

    Spoiler:

NOT EVEN A POSE JUST AN EXCELLENT TRAINING ARC

    Spoiler:

    UGH SO GOOD

tldr; I love this show a lot

    ❤ MISTRAL IMMORTAL ❤

???? ofc he couldn't care less that's why he traveled all the way to Egypt in order to beat up an evil ~100 year old British vampire who stole his great great grandpa's body to place a curse on his mama for bants screw his mum!!!!!

less delinquent, more stoic. iirc he skips school so he can beat up bad people round the town. more bout movie archtypes tbh. Jonathan is the traditional hero on a journey to banish evil, Joseph is Chris Tucker from Rush Hour but not black and Jotaro draws more inspiration from Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone: the silent masculine badass built like a wall from Trump's wettest dream.

(got bored and finished Made In Abyss there are slight spoilers for eps 1-3 which shouldn't ruin the viewing experience for you but here's your warning anyway)

High Fantasy's a dying breed. Shows like Konosuba, Re:Zero and DanMachi exist, but often use the setting as a device and not a focus; DanMachi's is killing monsters for loot, Re:zero is about loving Emila and the dangers of white knighting while Konosuba is Magical Curb Your Enthusiasm/Seinfeld/Always Sunny In Phili aka "shitty people doing shitty things" comedy.

Made in Abyss is a masterclass in atmosphere at work and a bit different. Imagine studio gibli, Final Fantasy 9 and Dark Souls had a baby, before abandoning it with a note telling it to come and find it at the bottom of Hell's toilet, decorated in bright primary colours when it's older. It drops you into the thick of things, thirsty for knowledge, before giving you little droplets here and there. The final shot of the first episode is a perfect culmination of every bit of information that's been fed to you up until now, coming at you like a burst dam.

The 2 main characters, Riko and Reg, compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses. Riko is curious and knowledgeable about the known aspects of the abyss while harboring great general survival skills. She's also as strong as you would expect a 12 year old child to be, which is not at all. Reg is some kind of super robot that doesn't break and can extend his arms like Mr Fantastic. What he has physically he lacks in mental fortitude: he panics easy and is quick to lose composure.

With the MCs as children, the author gets away with a lot. Innate childlike curiosity and wonder to gaze upon the unexplored, those kind of things. We'll no doubt be playing the role of the adult many times when you shout at RIKO TO STOP BEING SO STUPID NO REG DON'T GO THERE FFS RUN so the kids can fully encapsulate that spell bounding feeling of exploring uncharted land.

They're also innocent without being naive. I can't think of a better way to say this, so i'll talk about dicks. dicks here, dicks out the ass. they talk about dicks more than you think but it never feels dirty, or sexy, or like you need to erase your watch history. More like how 8 year olds play house and wonder why guys have this thing and girls don't . Yet there's an episode where Riko tries to explain cannibalism to Reg and a small scene where she uses live animals as bait to cross a platform. She's unfazed by the horror and knows it will be dangerous, but with good ol' Reg the Robot it'll be ok!!!!!!!!!!!! (ps it won't)

Joseph Campbell coined something called The Hero's Journey which is a very prominent narrative used in Fantasy or Shonen stories. In Narnia, Wizard of Oz or even HxH the underlying narrative of choice is the protagonist's venture into adulthood and how they emerge on the other side. But with MiA, there's a recurrent ominous feeling that betrays its cheerful storybook art pallet thanks to the information in ep 2&3 that slowly oozes out from the abyss:

    - as of now there's 6 identified layers. there's a 7th layer which is a myth rn, with no one knowing how many layers the abyss holds
    - Raiders (people who go into the abyss) send information via hot air balloon upwards
    - If Red whistles go into the second layer, it's treated as suicide and no search parties are sent after them because the risk of ascending upwards isn't worth it
    - Lysa's (Riko's mum) whistle made it back to the surface. The town threw a huge festival to celebrate her return. But Lysa never came back. So why is everyone so happy??????

all of this info drastically changes how we view Riko and Reg's journey, a journey that Riko 100% cannot come back from. This is due to how the curse of the abyss works. You can desend without any worries. but the moment you start to ascend up the abyss, oh boy. Level 1, the level you see children practising and excavating on, induces light nausia and vomitting. Again, level 1. Level 4 is "intense full body pain along with uncontrolable bleeding from every part of your body." Ascending on level 6 means "death and/or loss of humanity"

'Ascend' isn't just going up a level, it's as trivial as walking up a 1 Meter slope. and it only affects humans. Since Reg isn't fully human he's good. At any point he could quit and run back to the surface, but that would be the same thing as damning Riko to death. It's very cruel and feels incredibly unfair and a reminder of the abyss of a whole. So when Riko and Reg start their journey it comes with dread and peril: if the journey won't end with them returning...how does it end? The last entire quarter of The Hero's Journey is cut off and inaccessible to then as soon as they jump down the abyss. Do they even survive?? Knowing that, a primary motivation to keep watching is to find out more about the abyss and its treasures, its secrets. The exact same motivation as the characters themselves have. It's a joy to watch only made much more pleasant by the amazing soundtrack the show has. Grab your earphones, sit near a fire and enjoy the ride.

Also been watching best show of the season Inuyashika. Here's the premise: a grandpa and this kid get killed by aliens, who remake them into androids who can hack computers, fly and shoot lazer beams. this is the alien's condensed conversation

"bro we killed 2 people we broke galatic laws help"
    "dw just remake them"
"yo we got 2 combat models we can't, they'll destroy the earth"
"not my problem, im late for dinner ffs"

watch the first episode and enjoy justice porn the anime. Make sure to call your grandparents after ep1 too. You'll know when you watch it.
