Wind and the faintest trace of smoke-scent flow over Kayla Beaumont as she flies through the air, her white hair billowing behind her. On either side of her, the six wings of a Volcarona beat; every downstroke rocks Gemini’s body ever so slightly, but Kayla has no fear of falling. Kayla has long grown accustomed to flying astride Pokemon, and Gemini is nothing if not trustworthy.

Beneath the two of them is nothing but a wide expanse of grassland. A few Pokemon can be seen from above, but Kayla isn't wearing her glasses and all she can see is a blur. She’s on her way to the Enigma Ruins, a place where few venture and reality is constantly twisting. In the name of research - and perhaps the acquisition of a new Pokemon partner - Kayla had volunteered to step up beside another strong Trainer and test a strange chemical spray that would supposedly alter the Ruins’ structure even further. While she isn’t used to working with others, she’s curious to meet this Trainer and the Ranger she’s been assigned. The names “Finch” and “San” are whispered in a thunderstruck awe; Kayla itches to know why.

A sudden lurch interrupts - and answers - Kayla’s internal inquiry. “Gemini?” Kayla asks, but the Volcarona recovers quickly, returning to a slower but much steadier flight. Kayla peeks down below, and she feels her heart jump into her stomach. On the edge of a small stone structure, standing alongside a Trainer, is a quadrupedal white Pokemon with golden hooves and a gilt ring of spirals and emeralds around its midsection. Kayla had only heard descriptions of this Pokemon, but there’s no mistaking it.

She and Gemini are a few moments away from meeting Arceus.

Kayla’s hand only trembles slightly as she gives Gemini’s furry body a few reassuring pats. As he begins to descend, Kayla murmurs, “You’re fine. I… I think this is our Ranger. Yellow hair, tall, matches the description.” A description that had left off the fact that he had an Arceus, but still. Kayla puts her glasses back on and steels herself. “Let’s land.”

A short, smooth landing later, Kayla is standing in front of San and an Arceus, a Pokemon she’d only heard about in stories and religious teachings. Respectfully, trying not to shake with over-reverence, she reaches out to shake San Sū-kagetsu’s hand. “Hello, San,” she says to the Trainer, then adds, “Hello, Arceus.” For a moment, she lets the greeting hang; then she realizes that she’s being a bit rude. “I’m Kayla,” she says, “and this is Gemini. It’s good to meet you both.” She looks around. “I seem to have gotten here pretty early. Hopefully Finch will be joining us soon.”

Shrouded by a large copse of tree near the docks, there is a neon blink of red.

Glimmering white scales capture the sun, reflecting resplendent rainbows onto dark skin. Finch reaches out to rest their hand on the great beast’s cheek with a soft sigh. The touch visibly melts away the anxiety knotted heavily in their gut. Wide wings fold tightly against thick bodice. Zenith’s head lowers with a deep rumble, low like thunder echoing from within its chest.

”They brought me here because of you, you know,” Finch breathes, meeting their forehead with the Lugia’s. Thumb traces the dark line of the legendary’s deep blue eyemask, a frown twisting at their lips. ”They won’t want me once you’re gone.” Their voice is quiet, hushed in a whisper. Zenith’s head tips forward to rest heavily on the human’s shoulder. It leans its crown against Finch’s head.

”They will,” comes the telepathic thrum, firm and unyielding. Then, a little more softly, ”They should. And if they don’t, remember that you have grown beyond them and their help, just as you’ve grown beyond me and mine.”

It’s supposed to be reassuring, but it makes Finch feel like the walls are closing in around them. They take a deep, slow breath, and then pull away. They steady themselves with a hand on Lugia’s neck and the base of its wing, then haul themselves up onto its back. Now or never, they think. It’s almost funny how the Wormhole scared them less, as if they trusted the volatile whim of whole other dimensions more than the reality of this world and the Enigma Ruins within it.

Finch pulls their flight goggles down over their eyes.

With a powerful beat of hand-like wings, Zenith rises to the sky. They go high, high enough so that tourists at the Park won’t be able to identify the shape of the legendary Pokemon, and those who saw them rising will doubt their own eyes. Usually, Finch keeps Zenith on a low profile, but they know this’ll be their last journey. At least let me have this, they think as they close their eyes and feel the wind scorching their skin, pressing their cheek against the leathery scales of the Lugia’s neck.

Zenith drops from above the ruins. Clouds part to let its large shadow cast down over the group, but the great flying beast stops in its path, pulling sharply up to correct itself into a hover. Finch feels the tension course through Zenith’s body through the powerful muscles thickening taut beneath their cheek. They raise their head.

    ”What is it?” Finch breathes.

    ”It’s here.”

Without further words, the Lugia slowly lowers, and gradually alights behind the figure of a white-haired girl and her majestic Volcarona with a wide buffet of wind, wind that steals away her words of hope that they’ll arrive soon as soon as they’ve come out. Finch’s eyes widen as they see the alabaster-furred figure that stands beside San’s familiar form. Breathless, they slide from Lugia’s back and step past Kayla, not quite registering her existence in the presence of the god Pokemon.

”Whoa, San, I didn’t know...” Finch breathes. They stop a few feet away, having to physically resist the urge of walking up and offering the goat-create an outstretched hand. Instead, Finch tucks their hands away behind their back, unable to keep from staring in awe.

Zenith, however, isn’t as impressed. Dark eyes narrow within navy mask, jagged lip drawing back in the slightest of snarls. A low rumble of discomfort echoes from within its chest for only a few moments before the Lugia musters some sort of composure, features falling even, but the fire remains within its eyes. Gaze sweeps over to the light-haired figure beside the deity, and when they do, they do not soften. After everything, Zenith can only help but wonder: What made this one more worthy? Large feet shuffle the Lugia closer, lording almost protectively over Finch, but not so much that it closes the Trainer off from their teammate.

”Don’t be rude,” comes Zenith’s telepathic nudge, echoing in Finch’s mind. They jump, a startled, then turn their eyes back to the woman who will be accompanying them on their run.

”Oh,” Finch says bashfully, then swallows hard, running their fingers through windswept line of hair. ”Sorry. Finch.” They offer their hand to her, and give a slight tip of the head back toward the Lugia. ”And this is Zenith.” Olive eyes roam over to her fiery companion, and they offer a slight smile, thinking of their own friend back home.

    Ranger San Sū-kagetsu and Gamma

Both Trainers arrived around the same time, both full of apprehension in the face of Gamma. San heard the mix of awe, determination, and fear in both of their voices, as well as the hostility in Zenith that San hadn't seen when they'd last met. San knew Finch; they'd shared quite an experience together in the Wormholes above these ruins before, but Kayla was a new face, and an experienced one from the look of her. San couldn't help visibly relaxing; the tension from the prospect of going into the ruins eased on his end, he figured he'd ease some of theirs as well. "Don't worry you guys, Gamma's completely harmless. See?" San reached out to pat on Gamma's chest, and Gamma knelt down at the touch. "Gamma's been with me forever, and he'll be really helpful inside the ruins. And he does speak, but through telepathy, so if you need or want to talk to him feel free," San started to go on, but Gamma cut him off with some telepathy to the whole group. "You seem to be in awe of me, Trainers, but I assure you I am not the same Arceus as the myths and legends go. At least, not yet. I am merely here to help San in his duties. And speaking of, we should be off as well."

Gamma spryly pushed up to its feet again, and began to turn around towards the entrance. A burst of spatial energy, and the door widened to account for Gamma and Zenith's sizes. "That is about the extent of my abilities. You can let your guard down a bit now, Protector." A side glance from Gamma to Zenith, and the telepathic words were all he spared for Zenith's open hostility, as Gamma bounded down the steps and waited near the open door. San couldn't help but laugh a little, and let a huge grin show. "Sorry about his dramatics! Hope we can get off to a good start regardless though, I'm eager to see your Sprays at work, and to guide you all through. Since it's my first time meeting you Kayla, let me be official! My name is Ranger San Sū-kagetsu, and this is Gamma! We'll be taking you through the Enigma Ruins today! I highly recommend leaving at least one of your Pokemon out at all times, and lets try to stick together; especially with your sprays changing the fabric of the Ruins, I don't want to get separated!"

With the whole speech out of the way, San quickly turned on his heels. He finally let his embarrassed face show to Gamma as he bounded down the stairs, speedily recovering as he went to stand near Gamma and wait for their friends to be ready to tackle the challenges ahead.

Austin leaned against the one metal door that still stood at the entrance he chose for the trainer he'd be escorting to meet him at. He didn't wish to get in the way of the team run that was taking place on the other side of mountain that would lead into the ruins itself. The area had been a victim of experimentation that had caused the very fabric of the location to become unstable. Austin sighed loudly as he didn't realize he was going to need to be escorting someone through such a dangerous location. He was only hired mere weeks ago and hasn't had the most experience compared to most other rangers. Still, the HQ determined he'd be best to escort their trainer to find potential new partners. This was his first endurance run as well, so he made sure to have a good lunch, and a bottle of water prepared in his small shoulder bag.

Today was a flat cap day for Austin. A small, gray woven wool cap to be exact. He felt like today would be full of mysteries, so what better than to wear the kind of cap a detective might equip after setting off to solve a case. He turned to glance at the door on the right; at least, the door that should be on the right. The door was off its hinges and resting against the ground. He leaned in and turned to see the darkness that covered most of the stone steps that led down into the ruin below. He reached down to grab one of the six pokeballs equipped on his belt, but refrained to do so.

"No... too early to see what we'll be dealing with today," Austin muttered to himself.

He returned to leaning against the one metal door that still stood. The time was now 1:55pm, and it was a sunny day as he adjusted the cap to shield his eyes, yet still be able to see ahead. He now awaited his trainer with slight dread the more he thought about how chaotic the ruins might actually be, mentally preparing for what on earth he got himself into today.

Kayla’s words have scarcely left her mouth before a hurricane-force gale crushes speech into silence and nearly knocks her off her feet. As she turns on her heels, trying to see whether or not a tornado is bearing down on them her, she fusses with glasses that the wind knocked loose. She gets her spectacles back into place, turning a blurry blue-and-white shape into -

The slightest of gasps escapes Kayla’s throat. A Lugia, bigger than imagining with feathers of pure alabaster, settles to the earth.

Swift as anything, Gemini rounds on the newcomer, all six wings flashing with fire. The human who disembarks the Lugia might as well not exist, for all the Volcarona cares - the Lord of Storms, barging in here like he owns the place, nearly knocked over his Trainer. Gemini might not be the boldest of Kayla’s Pokemon, but he’s got a protective streak a mile wide. The Volcarona’s blue eyes flash with restrained anger, a warning: he isn’t stupid enough to play the odds with a god over a small slight, but he’s still worthy of respect. He won’t hesitate if either of the legends that surround him try to exert authority over his Trainer or over him, a Pokemon whose kind once became the sun.

Then, abruptly, Gemini falters. Not because of Finch or Lugia - or rather, Zenith, as this member of the species goes by - but because of Gamma. Arceus himself bows a knee, speaking reassurance in a telepathic voice. With the legends showing a bit of humility, Gemini trills quietly and nods to Gamma. His wings lower and dim, but a light still burns inside, both apology and reminder. Gemini may have let his temper flare, but he wants it known that he and his Trainer have as much right to be there as the others.

Kayla, meanwhile, is slowly but surely recovering her composure. Gamma nearly doubling the size of the caveronous doorway as casually as anything is bizarre, but seeing the Arceus prancing around like a Skiddo in summer, Kayla feels a little jollier, more at ease. Gamma’s just another Pokemon, Kayla reminds herself. A hugely powerful Pokemon, but a Pokemon.

San’s attempt to put the conversation back on rails is helping, too. She returns San’s smile and chuckles - a light, airy sound. “It’s good to meet you. Both of you. And you two as well,” she adds to Finch and Zenith. For a moment, her gaze lingers on the Lugia. He’s showing tension the way most avian Pokemon would - raised feathers and a combative posture - but why? Kayla’s no theologian - or cryptozoologist, depending on who you talk to - but in what meteorological research she’s done, she’s encountered descriptions of Lugia’s incredible, storm-calling powers. What’s he got to be afraid of? Or, an even stranger idea, angry about?

The suggestion to keep out a Pokemon is something Kayla fully embraces. She’s brought her most reliable Pokemon for this journey - the loyal powerhouse that is Gemini; the energetic and graceful Mabel; the unflappable and analytical Katara - and amidst godlike power, Kayla’s going to cling to the familiar. Still, she’s mostly confident as she makes her way down the stairs, careful not to get too far ahead of her Ranger or partner. Gemini follows beside, spilling red-gold illumination from his wings as he flutters along to light the way.

Jiji shrugged, trying to balance the weight of his partner and his bag across his shoulders in a way that wasn't cumbersome. the bag continued to be unwieldy, but the Pikachu at least was conscientious enough to move spots; carefully moving from one shoulder to the other, gripping lightly to his jean-jacket with its front paws to maintain balance while he fiddled with his belongings. It's own jacket was tucked messily into the straps of Jiji's bag, having found it to be too hot on the hike-out to the ruins. Another minute of walking and grumbling saw the bag put to rights, and the Pikachu haphazardly laying itself across the top of the backpack and his trainer's shoulders, languidly enjoying the extra space to sprawl out while his friend walked them both towards their destination.

The sun was fairly high up through the foliage, and occasionally he had to squint through sun-glare to read the path markers leading out to the out-post he'd been directed to, but the ruins eventually loomed into view.

Something about this section of the park felt...off, compared to the rest of the place. Unstable. Almost forbidden, in a way, given how closed off it was. it had been suggested to him as a destination given the variety of things one could encounter and experience in the area, but the general air of the place was giving him nerves. Whatever had happened here, it hadn't been pleasant, or at the very least, unnatural.

A figure leaning against a particularly sturdy looking door came into view as he made another turn, and after vaguely recalling the description he'd been given of his assigned ranger, he raised his hand up to wave and catch their eye. This seemed like the person he was after.

"Hey!", he called. "Are you Ranger Austin by chance?" Ricktor, roused by the shouting, sat up and looked over Jiji's shoulder to see what was happening himself. he tensed a little as he took up a position closer to his trainer's head; this place put him on edge as well.

"Hey!", Jiji called. "Are you Ranger Austin by chance?"

Austin tilted his head up and caught sight of the young trainer jogging towards Austins position. He yawned softly, stretching his arms out since he'll finally be able to move around after waiting in place. "Indeed I am!" Austin spoke loudly as the trainer closed their distance. He was taller than Austin, but he never really cared; He was use to a few people towering above his height. "Austin Kigahen! Pleasure to meet you... Jiji, correct?" He happily said as he tilted his cap and turned to his side. He glanced at the Pikachu that rested on his backpack.

"Smart move to keep a partner Pokemon out like that. No clue what'll happen once we head down... that," He explained with the smallest hint of caution. "But let's not keep you waiting! Let's dive right in," Austin said as he reached into one of his jean pockets; Pulling out a small, silver coated Zippo lighter. He adjusted the top off with his thumb, then flicking down on the wheel of the lighter to generate a spark; He held his arm out as the flame ignited, putting his arm through the doorway into their entrance to the ruins. It was bright enough to see the rock that surrounded them; A few dead light lines that use to shine bright enough to prevent the darkness from covering the way down. The stone stairs that lead down had a few cracks within, but nothing harmful enough to cause the stone to separate and cause one to fall down.

"Yeah, this should do, let's go," Austin calmly spoke with a small, having his free hand to signal to signal that Jiji should now follow.

The mountain they had entered was kind to them. The ruins had a dirty habit of changing the very area they would be exploring in a matter of seconds. But everything was... calm. The occasional sound of built moisture dropping from small stalagmites that hung silently above the duo as the descended deeper into the ruins. The steps were solid and smooth, yet not enough to cause one to lose their footing. The lighter had helped their traveling into the underground setting quite nicely, but Austin quickly flicked the top back on and set it back in his pocket. The two reached the final step, Austin stepped down and a few feet forward, only to be greeted by a large, metal vault door. The door had a bright, shining set of lights above it, to make sure the rangers wouldn't blindly run into it by accident. Austin reached forward and set his hands on the lock; the metal was cold like ice. He sighed with a slightly shiver from the chill in his hands.

"We've had to keep the ruins tightly locked. Never know what could be lurking around that could cause damage to the ruins and its fragile environment," Austin explained as he began to spin the vault lock in different directions. It was quite the complex combination, but it was one that took many hours of memorization and physical practice back at the training academy.

"Speaking of the ruins, what motivated you to tackle the most... unstable and complex area of the Park, compared to the others?" Austin asked as his arms were in motion with lock.

Zenith’s descending gale is stronger than it ever intended, powers intensified by the simmering anger low in their gut. Head turns to the sun-incarnate, who reacts with fire before the stormlord can even muster even a semblance of an apology. This gives them pause—they take in the creature’s fury, how quickly they leapt to defend their Trainer, and sees itself in the Volcarona’s response. It soothes them somewhat.

In the time it takes for the Lugia to collect itself, Gamma does the sun-taming for them when it kneels at San’s touch. The Lugia watches with a distant detachment as they force the ruffled feathers of their wings to smooth, before finally offering a sincere, telepathic ”Apologies, sol.” A slight tip of the head accompanies the apology. When Gamma’s attempt at placating the lord of storms echoes in the confines of Zenith’s mind, it does not receive an outward acknowledgement.

Finch smiles and nods at San and Gamma’s reassurances. To anyone else, it might be disappointing that this one isn’t the one of legend, but Finch is merely awed enough by being in a presence that may one day craft new legends of its own.

The reminder of the spray is what finally sobers them. It’s a reminder that leeches away much of their awe and excitement, leaving uncertainty and insecurity that’s raw to the touch. They remember why they’re here. Finch turns their eyes over to Zenith, who gives a reassuring glance back in their direction. The thoughts of if they’d be there without Zenith press in close, like walls of a room collapsing around them, and Finch isn’t sure if being with the Lugia makes it better or worse.

”It’ll be alright,” Zenith reassures gently, telepathically. ”We’ll show them.” Jagged lip crooks in the closest thing that a Lugia can manage to an almost mischievous smile before the great beast lowers its head to give Finch’s back a firm nudge forward. Finch stumbles forward a bit and manages a playful grin in return, then falls into step beside Kayla.

”Beautiful Volcarona,” they manage a bit sheepishly. They’d missed the introductions that had taken place just before (and during) their landings. ”Oh, uh, you two are?” They keep their voice quiet as they enter, going on alert as they begin to leave behind the light, with only the Volcarona’s glow to guide them.

    Ranger San Sū-kagetsu and Gamma

After the rocky introductions, San was glad to be moving forward with the excursion; anything to help with the tension of the two legends glaring each other down. San would have to ask Gamma about what Lugia's (and his own) problem was later, but for now they'd press on, the sound of the spray a stark reminder of the peril and importance of this expedition. San was also uncertain about Kayla and her Volcarona at first, wondering how they'd handle not only Gamma but also Zenith's presence, but the magnificent display by Gemini quieting down Lugia and eliciting a small telepathic chuckle from Gamma told San that they'd be a-ok.

San sure was grateful for Gemini's presence in the ruins as well. The doorway they'd entered led into a long, dark hallway made of brownish-gold bricks. It looked exactly like the ruins of Alph that San had seen on TV before, and he half-expected a Researcher to take off past them at any moment, studying the foundations and looking for some Pokemon clues. However, the only light and company they had was Gemini and each other, and so they trudged forward, Gamma floating above the grounds and a bit ahead of everyone else. The rest of the party naturally gravitated to huddling near Gemini, like moths to a... bigger moth, and San couldn't help but laugh at his own natural tendency to walk near the light. Another thing he noticed was a faint thudding sound; it wasn't rhythmic, but rather happened in short spurts or long intervals seemingly at random.

The thudding only grew louder and louder as they kept walking, until eventually they came to the first corner. The party stopped, with Lugia's thundering behind noticeably stopping as they turned the corner. Ahead, a light shone with Gamma right near the entrance. Everyone hurried forward, the thumping louder than ever, hearts pounding as they came to the source...

The entrance came into a natural clearing; what looked to be a wide open meadow about 50 yards across each way, though there was a noticeable place where the meadow hit the wall, as well as . This didn't detract from the natural beauty, however; a whole room full of green grass and wildflowers, even without the warmth of the sun, was soothing to behold. In the middle of the meadow, two brown and white flashes were the source of the noises; they were a blur, but every time they collided they heard the dull thwack once more. Soon, however, the blurs slowed down, revealing two small brown birds, with small leek swords in wing. The Farfetch'd soon noticed the 3 humans and Pokemon staring at them; attention and webbed feet turned from the duel they were having to the intruders, and heads tilted to opposite sides as they sized up those who would dare disturb a Farfetch'd duel.

"Keeping a place like this locked up makes sense, yeah. Who knows what could wander out." he watched the mechanism of the lock tumble around as the ranger manipulated it, curious how one went about designing something so complex. There had to be a lot of work put into making something like that.

"And that's sort of what drew me here, to be honest about it. Anything could be hanging around here, and I'm not 100% sure what I want to see or catch, or if I want to catch anything at all. It seemed like it could be quite the experience, and I'm really out here looking for those. More stories to write home about and memories to keep." he paused for a moment suddenly a little sheepish. "Sorry, not sue how much of that made sense, ha."

He glanced around, suddenly unnerved by the conversation and the area around them. Was it normal for a place advertised as being the most chaotic area to be so...tranquil? If this place was meant to be dangerous or strange it wasn't really living up to its reputation just yet. It was off-putting suddenly how stark a difference that was from what had been described to him. Ricktor poked his head out over his trainer's shoulder a moment, sensing his unease, and tilted his ears around searching for potential trouble.

It was probably fine; the ranger seemed calm enough about everything, anyway. Still....
