Still rolling his neck to shake off the sleep, Oliver nodded a few times. "Let me just radio back... Hello? Yep, run's going fine. I've got a 6-3-B... no, that's the one with an artifact and an unexplored hostile area...it'd be a faster system if people remembered it, you know. Er, sorry. Yeah, nerves. Okay. ...Nope, don't know what it is... Sure, just have 'em in by tomorrow. Thanks so much." Clapping his radio back onto his belt, he turned and grinned to Opal and her serpent.

"Sorry to keep you waiting! But now that we're past that... worryingly long detour, we can get back to the run! You mentioned wanting to see Minior, right? If we're gonna spot those on a night like tonight, only real option is down on the flats, by the riverbed! You ready? Oh, right, you're good to take a breather, Jareth. Good work as usual on extraction duty," he concluded, scratching his companion behind the ears one last time before recalling him. With another nod to Opal, the Ranger strode back down the hill, pressing through the tall grass under the cloud-muffled light of the stars. The undulating river slid into view below them, though still a good ways off. Oliver, meanwhile, was running through a mental checklist of other landmarks in the valley, trying to remember what else he could add to the run. Wait, you're forgetting conversation, man, you can't count on wild 'Mons to carry the tour for you!

"Er, anyhow! Why're you in the market for Minior and, uh, Ralts, right? Planning to take them into the pro training circuit with you? Or just for companionship? I have heard good things about keeping a psychic-type around the house!" Yeah, that'll work. He turned back to await an answer, even as they drew closer to the riverbank and the breeze began to carry a sound almost like singing. Past Oliver, in the distance beside the dark surface of the water, a handful of pink dots could be seen, apparently the source of the sound.

    Trainer Post 11

Jargon was familiar to a league Trainer like Opal, but Oliver’s Ranger talk might as well have been an entirely different language. She tuned out for a moment, one arm around Darius’s slender body while she stared up at the sky. Still no stars, but there was something peaceful about gazing into the open atmosphere. She’d been up among the clouds multiple times. Many dragon Pokemon were some manner of flier - or floater, in Eliza’s case - and she took them flying as a recreation, trust, and just plain exercise exercise whenever she got the chance.

It didn’t take long before Oliver was finished, though, luckily enough. Opal turned back to acknowledge his apology with a murmured, “‘S fine,” but she perked up considerably when Oliver mentioned the riverbed. The clouds seemed impenetrably thick to her; flat terrain didn’t exactly seem helpful.

Not that she was the expert here; she wasn’t going to gainsay the Ranger in a subject about which she knew so little. The night was beautiful, and she was perfectly content to follow behind Oliver. She would never get tired of hiking through nature, and this new forest was extremely exciting, especially considering the mysterious Pokemon that lived here. Quiet for once, she just watched the world go by, eyes roaming eagerly over the terrain. Old, gnarled trees surrounded them; long grass tickled her legs; in the distance, she spied a river twisting through the valley. Was it her imagination, or was there something else out there…?

Oliver’s question drew her attention back quickly, though. “Oh, there’s a couple reasons,” she said. “I mean, I’m mostly a dragon tamer, right? And I love dragons - especially my dragons,” she added with a playful glance at Darius, “but I want to try to expand my training horizons, learn a bit about different Pokemon. Minior are really beautiful and powerful, and I’ve heard the Ralts line is a good, er… beginner psychic Pokemon.” She paused. She considered asking Oliver about his experiences with psychics, since he did have an Espeon, but she stopped as they came out onto the bank. Darius was looking intently at something and when Opal followed his gaze, sure enough, there was something weird. She wasn’t sure whether they were right above the river or on the other bank, but some sort of… orbs were floating in the distance.

Through the warm night air, Oliver could already hear the tell-tale sounds, like the sound of a deflating balloon when you pinch its sides. Immediately, his hands went to his pockets, fumbling through his supplies. Come on, did I remember some... Yes! The ranger grinned as he pulled out two sets of wax-mold earplugs. One unwanted nap is more than enough for the night, thank you very much! Turning to offer a pair to his charge, he quickly explained the situation.

"There's a concert of Jigglypuff meets up pretty often in the Valley, and it looks like a couple of them picked this spot for tonight. In and of itself that's pretty great, but because Rangers are always generally nice to 'em, they've gotten way too friendly for their own good. That's where these earplugs come in because they're warming up and if they spot us we're gonna want to-" The squeaking stopped for a moment, replaced with quiet chittering as the puffballs quickly convened before finally edging toward the humans (and snake) intruding. "-Aaaaaand they spotted us. No worries! Act cool and they ought to leave us alone after a few minutes. Talk to you on the other side," he concluded, fixing his own earplugs in place.

Just in time, as well, since the bunch was already closing in. Having already deafened himself, Oliver gave one last thumbs-up to check whether Opal was ready to handle the swarm. Six or seven Jigglypuff and Igglybuff bobbed lightly in the wind, their dam Wigglytuff heading up the rear carrying a determined expression and a rather uncomfortable-looking Igglybuff, the juvenile still warming up diligently despite its apparent shyness. Oliver, for his part, crouched down and smiled warmly, though very pointedly not extending his hands or making any sudden movements.

Lots and Lots of Jigglypuff appeared!

Okay, what was Oliver up to now? He was rifling through his supplies like his life depended on it - were these weird pink blobs something really dangerous? Darius seemed to sense both Trainers’ tension; he raised his body off the ground and stared daggers at the pink things, which were steadily growing closer.

The extremely-vital supplies that Oliver pulled out of his bag were… earplugs. Opal quirked an eyebrow. If these Pokemon had some sort of vocal attack, then earplugs weren’t exactly likely to do any good. The Ranger’s explanation about a concert of Jigglypuff didn’t help much, either. Opal had heard of Jigglypuff before - they were some sort of puffball rabbit fairies that evolved into taller puffball rabbit fairies - but she hadn’t run across Pokemon of their line particularly often. “Are they really that bad at singing?” Opal asked, accepting the proffered earplugs with a skeptical expression. “I mean, the squeaking is a little irritating, but…”

Darius let out a warning hiss, so quiet that Opal barely heard it. The Jigglypuff were all around now, bobbing on the wind as easily as if they were made of dandelion fluff. With any other species of Pokemon, Opal might have felt threatened, but it was hard to be intimidated by a bunch of pink, wide-eyed balloons with legs. She shot a glance at Oliver, but he was sticking in his earplugs. As he signaled with a thumbs-up, Opal sighed. The Ranger knew the Pokemon of this place better than she did, right? Maybe she should take a cue from his urgency. She packed the earplugs into her ears; not being able to hear was annoying, but she would have to trust Oliver until she could ask him what the heck the deal was with this bunch of rabbits.

A thought occurred to Opal; she winced as she saw Darius locking eyes with the leader of the warren, a big Wigglytuff carrying a nervous Igglybuff in her arms. Darius’s tail thumped once against the earth, a silent but meaningful warning to the Pokemon who the humans were so afraid of.

Keeping her voice as quiet as she could without being able to actually hear it, Opal whispered, “Darius, we’ve got a ways to go, yet.” She reached slowly into her pack and held out his Pokeball; being recalled would make him feel weak, so she needed to handle this carefully. “These guys aren’t aggressive, so there’s no point in getting into a fight with them. Wait it out in your ball, and then we can move on.” She then clicked the button on the Pokeball, hoping that she’d reassured him enough. She was sure her Serperior was plenty strong enough to deal with a bunch of creampuffs; there just wasn’t a point to having a battle here.

    Ranger Post 13

Don't eat their food. Don't listen to their songs. And never, ever follow them home. The Park rules for dealing with the fair folk was simple enough- staff decided it needed to be easy to remember. Truthfully, Oliver had never tried breaking one of those rules. Perhaps some part of him was curious, wondering if the folk tales were true. But it was far and away drowned out by common sense, especially tonight, on the night of the full moon. Now that the cloud cover was beginning to clear, the Ranger swallowed hard, patting himself on the face. It's gonna be a good night.

A few of the Jigglypuff perked up noticeably as the clouds thinned, their ears twitching softly and their eyes sharpening into focus. Thankfully, however, the majority of them seemed disinterested- or rather, saw the massive snake, clearly itching to assert his dominance, and immediately did everything in their power to seem disinterested. To their credit, nearly all of them gave off the impression as though there weren't a hundred pounds of vines and ego slithering around them. All but a few. The matron of the pack, unfazed or unaware of Darius's display, waddled insistently in the group's way, all but shoving a horrified Igglybuff in the travelers' faces. A bit more prodding, and the shivering babe lifted its face and its voice to begin singing.

Nobody there could comment on the singer's skill, mind. Of those who were capable of hearing, one was filled with motherly bias and the other practically seething that anyone would dare intrude on its master's personal space. Opal carefully and slowly tried to talk down Darius, more than aware of his nasty prideful streak. Yet unfortunately, between his frustration and the song dulling his nerves, he snapped, literally lashing out with his tail in what should have been a second warning display but carelessly knocked aside a puffball floating in his periphery.

Surprisingly, this didn't seem to anger the mother- she simply beamed wider, set the kitten down gently, and prodded it forwards. It seems that she wanted to show off more than just her child's singing skills! While the kit nervously puffed itself up to look larger as it settled into a fighting stance, the dam bowed in a mock-display of a Trainer's challenge. Oliver cursed himself for underestimating their intelligence. If we turn our backs now, that's denying a challenge. Does that make the alternative okay? The mother seems fine with it, but...

Oh. My. Gods. Opal could have facepalmed at Darius’s reaction - the Igglybuff hadn’t done anything to attack him, and it was about as harmless as a Pokemon got; why did Darius have to bother trying to mix it up just to prove that he was bigger and badder than a goofy pink puffball?

However, as Darius’s body lashed, his head tilted toward Opal; she recognized a glazed, tired look in his normally-bright red eyes. Instinct nearly prompted her to recall Darius in spite of his desire to fight, but she knew immediately that this would be a terrible idea. Whenever she released him, he’d be angry that he’d been made to look weak in front of so many Pokemon, and she really didn’t need to be in the middle of the woods with her Grass-type in a mood for mutiny. She resolved to give him a talking-to later - right now, there was a situation to be dealt with. The Wigglybuff was offering a challenge in the form of her Igglybuff child, and neither Opal nor Darius could refuse in good conscience. You can’t run away from a Pokemon battle, after all.

“Alright,” Opal said, rubbing her temples. Darius twitched; Opal realized that she was practically yelling. Cursing the way the earplugs deafened her to her own tone, Opal repeated herself more quietly. “Alright. That thing probably relies on vocal attacks, and it’ll need a lot of air to do those, so… we gotta keep it on the defensive.” Opal sped up a bit as she noticed Darius’s head drooping ever-so-slightly. “Darius! I want you to use Leaf Tornado to keep the Igglybuff off-balance! Throw your whole body into it!” With luck, this would hit two Pidoves with one Rock Throw. The extra motion would help Darius to stay awake, while the turbulence of the Leaf Tornado would hopefully keep Igglybuff from getting enough extra air to attack.

Darius was more than happy to receive the command. Within a blink, a pulse of emerald light consumed him from the leaves on his tail to the tip of his pointed nose. He lunged forward like an arc of green lightning, a funnel cloud of leaves starting up in his wake as he moved to cut between the Igglybuff and its mother.
