Default Kaiko, Beginner Capture Quest 2 (Lychee)

Dwellers of the Beiyang Fleet are not known to give their respect freely or lightly, a lesson that Kaiko has learned repeatedly over the course of her life in the Squall Kua. Her recent share with Captain Lee and his crew has been one more object lesson in a long line of many that showed that the people of Squall were… not contemptuous, exactly, but possessed of the tendency to treat others as weak until proven strong. As such, the fact that the Squall Kua’s people tend to consider those of the Chasm Kua as rough equals tells Kaiko that she’s walking into dangerous turf.

That said, Kaiko is no Mantyke among Sharpedo. She has strength of her own, strength enough to tame a Carvanha and earn the respect of a fishing captain - an impressive feat in a Kua where the local marine life can mangle limbs and end lives in the blink of an eye. So when she arrives on the outskirts of one of Chasm’s coastal settlements, confidence straightens her back and strengthens her land-legs.

This village is rather small. Compared to most of the stories travelers tell of the Chasm Kua’s brutal badlands and blinding fog, it’s actually a rather nice place, with simple rounded buildings made of stone built along a riverside. From here, Kaiko can just barely see the ocean, like a little reminder of home in the periphery of her vision.

Strangers don’t go unnoticed in small communities like this. A pair of women, both bearing the heavy muscles and streaks of ashy grime of blacksmiths, glance at Kaiko and mutter to themselves, chuckling. A boy seemingly too young for the sword he carries shoots Kaiko a look of mixed curiosity and suspicion. A gaggle of Primeape and Mankey pass by, carrying sacks of equipment on their backs… except for a few, a small group of Mankeys who seem more like tagalongs rather than trained pack animals. The latter group slows as the whole troupe passes by, giving looks of mixed curiosity and suspicion to the Squall girl in their midst.

Not all eyes are on Kaiko, but she’s definitely being watched. What she does next and the kind of first impression she makes is in her hands.

((OOC: Heads up, Azu was an Azurill, and at the end of the last quest, leveled up to become a Marill. No Azumarills here yet!))

Confidence did straighten Kaikos legs, yes, but she had also spent all day fishing and most of the night curled up on the boat- and neither her pokemon, nor she, had had much rest. It was important to give a strong impression, but her arms ached, and she was sure that her Azurill (which was a baby while on the fishing boat adventure) was feeling a little worse for wear too. The Carvanha, of course, was just as beat up as she had left it.

She popped out her two pokemon from their balls, and gave them a quick look-over. Scratches, bruises, and a very unseemly drip of saliva and blood from the corner of Fiyuros mouth. She dipped her hands into her pockets again and drew out two Silver berries that she couldn’t remember having before. She assumed they’d been snuck in with the pay from the boat.

Throwing one to Azu, she gave her trusty girl a smile ”You hold on to that one- if you pass out, chow down. But NOT BEFORE, ok?” While she trusted the pragmatic little creature, sometimes it wasn’t very good at following orders. Looking over at Fiyuro, she pursed her lips. No way that fish could ‘hold on’ to anything. ”And Fiyuro… uh… If you pass out I’ll throw this to you, ok? But I’ll hold onto it for now.” She wanted to reassure the terrifying (And possibly terrified) fish that she would look after him too, so she dipped into her pocket to find another berry. This time, a Sitrus. She lobbed it at Fiyuros gnashing mouth.
    ”Have this one, for now”

As the gaggle of Mankeys passed by, Kaiko suddenly felt rather insecure. The firmness of the ground wasn’t actually grounding for her at all, and she kept trying to compensate for waves that weren’t actually there. She angled herself towards the most familiar thing there- the river. Her Carvanha looked a little silly just flopping about on the ground.

”How about we get you to some water, hm?” She said it as if the reassurance was for the fish pokemon, rather than for herself. She cast her eye over at Azu, who was normally a sleepyhead in the mornings.

”And Azu, maybe you should Rest.” She admitted, taking off her simple jacket and making it into a sling, so Azurill could hop up and snooze while they walked. She felt pretty damn unprepared right now, but wouldn’t let that stop her pressing on!

After being let out of their Pokeballs, the two Pokemon almost immediately flopped, obviously exhausted from their earlier brawl. However, Kaiko’s voice - in combination with the promise of food - helped them to perk up. With a flick of her tail, Azu caught the Silver Berry she was thrown, positioning it between her short blue paws. She sniffed curiously at it, but she understood Kaiko’s request, and held off on chowing down for the moment.

Fiyuro, meanwhile, was downright delighted to receive his Sitrus Berry - despite his natural inclination toward a carnivorous diet, like most Pokemon, he appreciated the healing properties of the powerful Sitrus and chomped it down.

As Kaiko distributed the food, a few of the passing Mankeys stopped, snuffling curiously. A few of them drew unnervingly close, whooping in excitement at the potential of snatching some berries for themselves -

“Ma!” Azu, seeing the Mankeys coming, raised herself onto her tail. Her body flashed with white light; the fatty lump at the end of her tail remained the same size, but her body began to grow, and small forepaws formed near the top of her still-round torso. “Ma!” she cried out again, this time defiantly, raising one paw at the Mankeys. The troupe seemed intimidated for the moment and backed off - none of them wanted to tangle with the newly-evolved water mouse.

With a happy squeak, Azu turned toward Kaiko, raising her paws and tail to show off her newly-evolved form. When Kaiko offered her a place to Rest, she happily obliged. Her evolution, combined with her time on the boat, she climbed up into Kaiko’s sling and fell asleep almost immediately.

Fiyuro flopped diligently, following Kaiko down to the water - but he wasn’t Kaiko’s only follower. The Mankey troupe was there, and a few of them dashed in front of Kaiko, cutting her off from the river. One particularly brazen monkey stepped up and hooted a challenge, hungry for the rush of battle, the recognition of its fellow Mankey, and most importantly the berries that Kaiko was carrying.

Kaiko might have celebrated Azus evolution a little more, but she was asleep within the wink of an eye! Cradling the now slightly larger Pokemon, she tried to make her way across to the river, but her little crew was blocked. Maybe I shouldn't have thrown so many berries around.. A trickle of regret ran through her mind - but she fought it back by reassuring herself that her Pokemon really did seem a lot happier and healthier now.

Looking from Fiyuro to the Mankey at the front of the pack, she pursed her lips. Hopefully if they beat off the upstart, the rest of the Mankeys would back off too. She shivered a little at the thought of being beat up by the whole gang. It would certainly put an end to her adventure quickly.
"Fiyuro, I guess we will have to fend off this guy first!" She looked down at her Carvanha and tried to figure out what sorts of moves he might have known.
"I guess... try ...Biting that Mankey?" She suggested, noting how big and gnashy Fiyuros teeth were.

She slowly put down her Marill, stepping back and ready to fight too. Occasionally, during her sleep, Azu had been known to talk, or mumble, or even blow bubbles and jet water! Kaiko wanted to be a little further away just in case something like that happened during battle- or in case the rest of the Mankey decided to attack!
Asking for help or going to the village for protection didn't even cross her mind. She was keen to prove herself out here before pathetically asking for aid.

The Mankeys’ hooting grew more frantic as Kaiko began to call out commands; they knew that the fight was on! The Mankey leader watched with keen red eyes. These fish and mouse Pokemon were new to it, but it was no stranger to a challenge.

However, it turned out to be completely unprepared for Fiyuro’s attack. The Carvanha paused his helpless flopping for a moment, then abruptly sprang up, his tail slapping against the grass and propelling him toward the Mankey with startling speed. The monkey had just enough time to raise up its arms and protect its vulnerable face and torso, and it let out a screech of pain and anger as teeth like knives sliced its arms.

[Fiyuro used Bite! The wild Mankey lost 5 HP! The wild Mankey flinched!]

The troupe didn’t seem offended that their leader had taken a hit; quite the opposite. They looked more interested than before, as this was no longer about berries, but showing this outsider what-for. The lead Mankey seemed to sense this shift in attitude; it no longer screeched and clamored, instead kicking Fiyuro away in determined silence. The Carvanha hit the ground with a soft thump, but he seemed as energetic as ever - perhaps even more than before, now that he’d been fed with blood as well as berries.

[Mankey… just kinda pushed Fiyuro away. Fiyuro lost 1 HP!]

Attracted by the noise, a Pokemon had sneaking away from town and toward the river. It was humanoid with dextrous hands like the Mankey, but that was where the similarities ended. This strange Pokemon was scaly like a Sandile and quick like a Sneasel, with a toothy grimace on its snakelike face and a swathe of shed skin hanging around its waist like some sort of bizarre pantaloons. The Scraggy didn’t seem to notice as a black apricorn fell from its “pockets” and rolled down the gentle slope toward Kaiko; it was far more interested in watching the ongoing fight, its red head frill lifted with interest.

The Scraggy was not the only one stirring now. While Azu was not yet fully awake, her ears and tail twitched. If she’d heard Kaiko’s earlier command she gave no sign of it, but she would no doubt only need a few moments before she was ready to properly launch into action.

Kaiko had heard that the people of chasm watched on while others fought in tournament style battles, but had never expected the pokemon to do the same thing! She wondered if the people of Chasm had learned this from their local pokemon, or if the mankeys had picked it up off the people. If the people of Squall could learn swimming and ocean survival techniques from the water pokemon, she wondered if the learning went in the opposite direction in her home kua too. These concepts flashed through her mind as she locked eyes with the Mankeys in the crowd, similarly standing back and letting her pokemon do the work. She relaxed her posture from a battle stance to more of a cheerleader one, fists ready to fly into the air instead of Mankey faces.

”Nice bite Fiyuro!” She congratulated him, then looked over at her side as a strange lizard settled in a little further back for some spectation too. She scooped up the hard nut-like apricorns that rolled across from the scraggys direction and shrugged. They were no good for pokemon to eat anyway, so she tucked them into her belt, shooting another look over her shoulder at the scraggy. If he hung around, she might share a pecha berry with him- because all good spectator sports needed snacks. Azu still seemed to be out for the count- like a disinterested girlfriend passing out while trying to watch the wrestling. Kaiko scowled at Azu, affectionately. Then, it was back to the game!

”Your teeth are your asset! Time to Crunch down on him, Fiyuro!” She cheered, marveling that her past fears about Carvanha teeth were now turned into pride and trust. It was wonderful to have a scary friend like that on her side!

From the way Fiyuro gnashed his powerful fangs together, he seemed to agree with Kaiko’s assessment. Unfortunately, the lead Mankey was spoiling for vengeance. Spoiling a fight against a flopping fish in front of such a big audience would be absolutely unacceptable. As Kaiko finished giving her orders, Mankey lunged, swinging with surprising strength for such a wiry-armed puffball. The blows didn’t stop coming; Mankey’s hands blurred in a series of brutal strikes.

[Mankey used Karate Chop! Fiyuro lost 6 HP!]

There was still plenty of life left in Fiyuro, however. The patient predator bade his time, watching Mankey with intent red eyes until it pulled back its right arm, overextended the left -

    Snap!

[Fiyuro used Crunch! Mankey lost 8 HP!]

Those teeth could - frequently did - lop sailors’ hands clean off. Mankey was lucky; there was a long, painful-looking gash down its arm, but it had the same number of extremities as it had when the fight had started. For a moment, the Mankey looked like it was interested in pushing his luck, but before it could make a move, Azu sat up from her spot in Kaiko’s arms. While she remained in her little hammock, she shot the Mankey a glare that could have cracked rocks. Reluctantly, the troupe leader bowed its head ever so slightly to Kaiko, then turned and barreled off back toward town, making sure to give the Squall Trainer and her Pokemon a wide berth.

“Scra!” The Scraggy’s grimace had turned to grin, now, as it watched the Mankey go. It didn’t seem to notice or care that it had lost an Apricorn; instead, its full attention was on Kaiko now. Bold as anything, it walked right up to her and tugged at her leg, only backing up a half-step when Azu chirped warningly. Gesturing for Kaiko to follow, it began to trot back toward town, though it seemed to be carefully keeping Kaiko within its sights.

Kaiko recoiled as the Mankey swung blow after blow at her precious fish, but she knew he was tough, so she didn’t bring him back in just yet. Heck, she knew Fiyuro would fight until he was smeared with his own blood and frothing saliva- it had been that way when she tried to catch him, anyway. With a sickening crunch, Fiyuro finally landed a blow, and Kaiko couldn’t help but crack a wide smile across her face. This was fun!

    ”Ahaa!”

Before anything more happened, Azu had sat up and given the Mankey a stare- Kaiko couldn’t see the intent in it, as she was behind the Marills head. It seemed to cool the Mankeys jets right off though, which she didn’t mind. She gave Azu a fond pet on the head to calm it down a little.

”Alright, alright, no need to freak out- your baby brother was winning the fight, Azu.” She tried to soothe the now-slightly-larger blue fluff of hers.

When the Scraggy tugged at her leg, she nearly jumped out of her shorts!

”Uwah!” She recoiled, dropped Azu (who chirped warningly) and kicked her leg out in surprise. Who knows, maybe she had just accidental kicked a Scraggy! Those pokemon were quite good at physical fights though, so in all likelihood the Scraggy ducked or blocked.

As it pointed and trotted off towards town, Kaiko shrugged.

”Something about that one reminds me of my sister.” She pursed her lips and looked at Azurill, then across at Fiyuro. Neither of them particularly knew what she was talking about. Kaikos sister was off on some rock somewhere, training in the physical arts- that’s what her mother had said, anyway. She wondered if the scraggy would make a good match for her.

”Alright FIyuro, I’m not going to make you flop all the way to town on dry land- the houses go streamside. Jump into the water and we’ll keep an eye on that Scrag as we go.”She relayed the plans to her crew, and tapped her shoulder as if to say Azurill could ride there—except Azurill was now Marill- and Marill is significantly bigger!

”Oh wait, uhhh… waitmaybenot!” She quickly withdrew the nonverbal command and tried to step backwards in case Marill was going to try it anyway. ”This deck ain’t quite broad enough for you anymore! You’ll have to travel under your own sail for now.”

Azu sighed in disappointment, shaking her head at her Trainer. If she had long arms like humans did, she’d be showing off her strength at all times. Humans were so weird.

Fiyuro, on the other hand-slash-paw-slash-fin, was more than happy to follow Trainer orders. Scraggy stopped to watch with a tapping foot as the fish flopped down to the water and splashed on in. The currents were a bit harsher than the placid coves he was used to, but he had no trouble navigating the river's course.

Fortunately, the path that Scraggy was leading them down was right along the riverside. The buildings were at least a bit sparse here, though they were still well-kept. Scraggy kept up a brisk pace despite its short legs, though it made sure not to lose Kaiko in this new, unfamiliar city.

It took only a few minutes to reach a small riverside plaza, with a small pier nearby. Thankfully for Fiyuro, this appeared to be a dock for boats rather than any sort of fishing area. Most of the people and Pokemon here were as busy as anywhere else in this village, and few spared Kaiko and her team a second glance. Scraggy bobbed and weaved through the crowd easily, rushing over to a man who was sitting at a bench, whittling an Apricorn into a Pokeball. Beside his feet was a Stufful, which looked pleadingly up at the man; the little bear-like Pokemon was thin and it looked like it had been in a fight recently. The man paid it no mind, focused as he was on his task.

“Crag!” Scraggy called to the man, hurrying forward. The Stufful sniffed curiously at the Scraggy, but the little lizard didn’t seem to care for the attention - casually, it kicked the Stufful to the side, ignoring its pathetic whimpers as it scampered to the man and pointed back at Kaiko.

The man put his whittling down, murmured something to the Scraggy, and passed it a berry, which it began chowing down on immediately. He then turned to Kaiko. Unlike most Chasm natives, the man looked pale and thin - more like a dusty scholar than a fearsome fighter. His gray eyes were razor-sharp, however, as he looked at Kaiko and Azu appraisingly. “Afternoon,” he said with a dry smile. “I see you’ve already met my little friend here.” He gestured to Scraggy. “You’ll have to forgive him if he was a little impolite; he’s an eager little beast. As you can probably tell, I’m not strong enough to fight in tournaments ‘round here myself, but I have an interest in contests of strength. This guy is one of my scounters; he finds strong Trainers and fighters and brings them to me to talk to, and I feed ‘im.”

The man paused, looking down at Kaiko’s heel. One ankle was occupied by Azu, but the Stufful had sidled up to the other one. “I’d like to talk business with you, but maybe you should do something about that little parasite there first, yeah?”

OOC: Heads up, Carvanha live in rivers that course through jungles, according to the pokedex. Freshwater is Fiyuros jam! I figure it’s a migratory evolution chain- rivers for spawning and growth, ocean for the fully evolved forms and bigger Carvanhas *Shrug*

Kaiko didn’t really miss having Azu ride everywhere- it was like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders- literally! She grinned down at her little team as they bounce/splash/stepped along, and felt like progress had been made. Going on an adventure out of her home town had definitely been a good decision, she affirmed to herself.

Despite following the Scraggy and the river, Kaiko couldn’t help but feel a little disorientated- land villages/cities seemed new to her, and she couldn’t judge the size by the amount of sails, or piers, and the layout was somewhat different too. When they reached theplaza, she tried to get her bearings, or look for a town sign anywhere- ships normally had names inscribed on the sides of them, but people didn’t follow that tradition with houses, so how was she supposed to know if she found the same house again!

As the scraggy ran up to the man, Kaiko narrowed her eyes at him, feeling a little annoyed. This man was probably the Scraggys owner, by the way it tried to gain his attention. Or, was he? Her hopes for a gift for her sister were dampened, but not crushed. The scraggy certainly seemed tough, by the way it kicked the Stufful aside, but the man seemed to think he wasn’t strong enough for tournaments.

”Ahoy. Right, to business.” She took her lead from the others without a care to the stufful- perhaps they were the annoying wingull of this area, and people took them out for sport. She wasn’t in a position to go around defending pests, and had no empathy for this particular one. Being on the water pretty much all of her life had made her feel at home with water types, rather than weird stuffed-animal pokemon. Her marill might have looked like a stuffed animal once, but she was more like a magical droplet of blue friendship, in Kaikos eyes- whereas nobody would make a stuffed toy out of a carvanha. The thought of that made her chuckle to herself.
”Azu, could you play rough with that one?” She gave her pokemon a grin, knowing that this would take care of things. In a world where she was constantly trying to prove herself, and when encountering pokemon she’d never seen before, it didn’t pay to waste time being gentle. A tiny doubt bloomed in her mind, however, that Azu wouldn’t do as she asked. Oh please please please don’t make me look bad in front of this guy She internally pleaded.
