For a perilous moment, Azu gave Kaiko a dubious look. What was the point in attacking a Pokemon that had already been roughed up? However, despite her sweet appearance, the Marill possessed a bit of her Trainer’s pragmatic streak, and she could tell that this was important to her Trainer. She clapped her front paws together and gestured Stufful forward with her tail; when Stufful walked over to her curiously, she immediately began to scuffle with the little plush bear. Stufful squealed in surprise, obviously not expecting Azu to be so harsh. With a squeal, Stufful wrested itself out of Azu’s noogie-giving grasp, then took off down the street, its ears and tail low.

[Azu used Play Rough! Stufful lost 5 HP!]

A chuckle emerged from the Scraggy, who was munching down the peel of the berry. The man rolled his eyes, but smiled as he said, “Thanks for that. A lot of strays think that just because I have understandings with wild ‘mons like this one,” he gestured to Scraggy, “that I’m just gonna throw free berries at ‘em.”

He put the apricorn he was working with away, seemingly satisfied, and pulled out a new one. “Name’s Kenjiro. You can think of me as something like a talent scouter - like I said, I’m not fit to fight in competitions myself. But I have money and supplies enough to back up strong Trainers who’ll make a good investment. Looking at your team, I’d say you have a fair shot at beating the Shi in a fair fight. ‘N’ say what you will about Hamada, he fights fair.”

Kenjiro paused for a moment, inspecting the apricorn he was whittling. “Mind, I don’t want to invest in you without seeing you in action.” He and the Scraggy watched Kaiko intently. “If you’re willing to show what ya got, this might be the start of a valuable partnership, even if it only lasts long enough for me to get a return off my bet on you being able to beat our Shi.”

((OOC: Yo! Could you put my black apricorn from before into the items list? I’m worried I’ll forget it otherwise!))

Kaiko smiled a little as the stufful ran off, but it was nowhere near as satisfying as beating up the mankey. She wasn’t sure whether that was because the fight was fairer then, or that it lasted longer and was more violent. Somehow that interaction just felt …unfulfilling. Still, she would try not to let it show. Kaiko gave Azu a thumbs up, and her eyes flicked back over to the man, scrutinizing him.

”Oh, so that scruffy little monster is wild, then?” Kaiko asked, raising an eyebrow. This not being her home territory, she didn’t actually know the names of all the creatures here. It was a hypothetical question though- she didn’t need him to confirm it twice.

”Beating the shi?” Kaiko repeated, turning over the phrase in her mouth. Surely THAT would be a more satisfying fight than simple street scuffles. It could be worth doing of its own accord, even if Kenjiro wasn’t there to invest in it. Her expression showed she was clearly thinking about the offer.
When he called for further confirmation that she could fight, Kaiko balled her hands into fists. She hadn’t given her name, but she was so annoyed that people here would also treat her like a kid, that she wasn’t going to even offer it yet.

”Look, Kenjiro, you asked me to beat up a tired stuffed toy already, and I’m not here to just scare off pests.” She scowled at him, uncaring of whether he would bet on her outcome or not, now. ”Unless Chasm kua really is as pathetic as they say, I don’t think beating up ownerless weaklings is going to help me beat Hamada” Her voice dripped with challenge and disdain, spitting out the word ‘chasm’.
    She crossed her arms.

”I don’t want your help. What I want, is that pokemon .”
She knew she didn’t have to ask- throwing a ball right there might have worked. Yet, this was a negotiation. A bluff? Maybe. Definitely a place where intimidation was key- she had seen the mankey fluff themselves up and stand with chests out, and she was practically doing the same.

((OOC: Whoops, sorry about that! The Black Apricorn is listed now.))

As Kaiko’s tirade continued, Kenjiro’s eyes narrowed; the girl’s insults had clearly irritated the man. “Every battle won is one step closer to greatness,” he said, his voice tight with irritation. “And in the Chasm Kua, we fight for what we want.”

He set his whittling things down beside him, glancing at Scraggy as he did so. The little lizard Pokemon was grinning fiercely, red crest raised, as if it enjoyed being fought over.

“I can’t stop you from claiming this Scraggy, if it wants to go with you,” Kenjiro continued, dusting his lap off, his movements completely unhurried. “But I’ve spent a lot of time bonding with it, and I don’t want to give it up easily. I can freely give you a battle you’ll remember against a couple of my newer recruits.” He reached into his cloak and pulled out a pair of hand-carved Dusk Balls.

Two small Pokemon emerged from the balls. The first was a bear cub with white fur; ice crystals dripped from its nose. It took up a battle stance, bearing stubby claws and spitting frost from its soft, round muzzle. Its beady black eyes locked on Kaiko.

The second Pokemon was a little less aggressive-looking, but no less intimidating. It looked like a simple dog at first glance, but the ruff of white fur that stood out against its tan coat was studded with jagged stones. Its brown-tipped ears and fluffy white tail lifted warily as it sized up its foes.

“Defeat Masaru and Ceiko, and I’ll respect your claim,” said Kenjiro. A small crowd was gathering, attracted by the sight of a Trainer loosing Pokemon, but Kenjiro and his Pokemon remained focused on Kaiko and her party.

”So this is the way we’re going to do things, then?” Kaiko narrowed her eyes at Kenjiro, firing back at defiant glare. ”Fine.” She stated, and her eyes flicked around at the crowd. This would have been much easier if everyone hadn’t been watching, but now that she was here there was no backing down. That would be weak.

Having never really been in a pokemon battle before, much less a two-vs-two, Kaiko wasn’t actually sure where to start. She hesitated for a few seconds, trying to formulate a strategy. A thought crossed her mind- did Chasm have some sort of rules or regulations on their fighting? Was it supposed to be one versus one? Did they have a creed or a code they went by?

    Because Squall didn’t.

”Azu! Fiyuro! Lets Surf!” She called out, grinning, stepping back hard onto a plank of wood and flipping the front part up slightly. There was water nearby, so she figured it might not be as much of a strain as normal. Plus, the added advantage of flooding the marketplace might disperse the crowd.

She readied herself for a surge of water- it was something that would probably put everyone at a disadvantage (except for Kaiko, because she COULD actually surf), and both her pokemon combined could potentially create a massive wave. Kaiko was about to be in her element, and she felt a rush of adrenalin, almost glee. She was testing out new limits to her pokemon and herself, and the excitement was intoxicating.

The crowd shrieked with surprise as the river quite abruptly burst its banks. Fiyuro and Azu worked in tandem; the Carvanha sent the waves surging up from the river, while Azu channeled them into a whirlpool of water that swirled into the square. Creaks and squeaks erupted as crates cracked beneath the force of the waves. The most force, however, hit Masaru and Ceiko. The Rockruff let out a howl of pain as she was swept off her paws; the Cubchoo rolled with the blow, but she managed to blunt some of the water’s force by freezing some of the water and holding back the block of ice she’d made.

[Azu and Fiyuro used Surf! Rockruff lost 16 HP! Cubchoo lost 9 HP!]

Kenjiro muttered a curse and staggered backward, nearly tripping over the bench he’d just been sitting on. Scraggy leapt to his shoulder with a cheerful chuff and clung to him, grinning gleefully. Kenjiro glared at the little Pokemon. “Laugh it up,” he grunted. “If I didn’t have a point to prove, I might just let the kid take you for being such a smart one.”

He then glanced at Kaiko, balanced on her wooden board. “Masaru! See if you can use that block as a raft and follow the water!” The little bear nodded, pulling herself up. The water was starting to recede, but there was still wave enough to ride. “Now, hit the stronger one! Use Avalanche!”

Ice surged from Masaru’s jaws once more; the frost changed the falling tide of Surf into a surge of icy shrapnel. Shards of ice scraped across Azu’s sides, and as a final gesture of defiance, Masaru hucked his ice board right at Azu. The Marill let out a cry of surprise and pain at the battering, but she didn’t seem terribly hurt.

[Cubchoo used Avalanche! Azu lost 5 HP!]

The tile of the square was still slick with water, but most of it had begun draining back to the river. Fiyuro had jetted upward with his Surf and now flopped next to Azu; the pair of them were in close quarters to Masaru, who hadn’t been able to get far after his ice-surfing stunt. Ceiko still looked battered, panting from apparent pain, but she was starting to recover.

“Masaru! Pin that fish down with Powder Snow! Ceiko, do the same to the Marill with Rock Tomb!” Masaru’s paws lifted as he prepared a new attack; Ceiko stumbled forward, a ring of bright white orbs forming around her raised nose.

Kaiko gleefully skated on the surface of the water, doing a circle – since she was so ready for it to arrive. She felt her heart swell just like the rivers banks when she saw how well her two pokemon were working together. The attacks landed, and even Kenjiro looked taken off guard! It made her really proud, for half a second, so she stopped focusing and tipped sideways into the water with a splash as he called out his instructions.
She didn’t mind being all wet- her clothes, belongings and skin was all very much used to it. She was grinning just as much as she regained her footing and looked out over the chaos she had caused, water receeding.

As the little cubchoo headed towards her team aboard a ship of ice, Kaiko caught her breath. Azu was about to be hit head-on, and she finally recognized where she had seen something like that creature before. She’d seen its evolution. She had never expected them HERE- she’d always thought they were from the frozen auroran mountains. But, she reasoned, theres no way they would easily get to the sea from Aurora- at least in Chasm there were beaches and bays rather than cliffs and strong currents. The evolution she’d seen from afar didn’t need to actually swim- those adult beartic could walk across the water and create a frozen path for themselves. Beartic had caused havoc to Squall fleets during winter- not only because those pokemon were fierce and strong, but because the leftover lumps of ice would beat up against unprepared wooden boats and splinter them apart.

It was suddenly time to take this battle a lot more seriously.

As she watched Azurill get absolutely smashed by the icy attack, Kaiko flinched. Even a baby one was apparently vicous. She was glad Fiyuro wasn’t the target- she had the feeling he wasn’t as hardy as Azu. When Kenjiro called out his next strategy though, Kaiko’s eyes widened.

”Fiyuro, Dive! Get out of the way of the icy one!” She shouted at him, throwing her arms to point towards the safety of the river. She wasn’t sure what rock tomb was, but she felt like Azurill could probably handle it, so she gave her Marill a command with a lot less urgency.

”Azu! Once he’s safe, stir things up with a bubble beam at that scruffy pup!” She pointed at the rockruff, and her eyes flicked up to Kenjiro. He had the scraggy on his shoulder? The nerve. It was like she was fighting for a prize or something. Like she was entertainment. Kaiko growled slightly.

Quick as could be, Fiyuro began to flop back toward the river; the water surrounding him lent him strength. Seeing Fiyuro making his escape, Masaru grit his teeth and let loose with the Powder Snow attack early. However, the faint touch of ice at his tail barely slowed him down; by the time he had submerged himself, the flakes of frost on his scales had already melted.

[Cubchoo used Powder Snow! Fiyuro lost 2 HP!]

Azu, unfortunately, did not have the element of speed on her side. A bombardment of stones launched from Ceiko, battering Azu and pinning her down with the weight of a heap of rock.

[Rockruff used Rock Tomb! Azu lost 5 HP! Azu was slowed!]

For a moment, it looked as if Azu had been buried in the rubble; however, after a moment she managed to pop her head and front paws out of the pile of stone. Before Ceiko had the chance to spring aside, Azu opened her jaws and sent a wave of bubbles flying at Ceiko with unbelievable speed. The Rockruff yelped as the bubbles bombarded her leg, leaving her with a limp. The Rockruff wasn’t equipped to deal with all of this water; she was clearly starting to tire, and her movements were sluggish.

[Azu used Bubblebeam! Rockruff lost 8 HP! Rockruff was slowed!]

“Hm,” muttered Kenjiro. He glanced down at the river, but Fiyuro showed no sign of returning to the surface and making himself vulnerable again. “Ceiko, Masaru, change in plans! Get the mouse while it’s vulnerable! Ceiko, Stone Edge; Masaru, follow with Focus Punch!”

Kenjiro’s shouts made Scraggy wince; it leapt down from Kenjiro’s shoulder and stood to one side, still watching the Pokemon battle with keen interest. Meanwhile, Ceiko began to glow again; the stones in her scruff lit up bright white as sparks of energy began to form around her. Masaru, unmoved from her spot between the river and Kenjiro, closed her eyes and began to focus. A halo of blue light began to form around one of her paws, slowly but inexorably growing stronger.

Kaiko sighed with relief as Fiyuro flipflopped his way back to the river, and didn’t get totally iced. When she had turned her attention back to the battle on land however, the rockruffs attack had smashed into Azu head on, and she bit her lip nervously. When Azu popped out of the rubble and blasted a bubble attack right back at the pup, Kaiko punched the air.

”Yes! Go Azu!” She cheered, noticing that one of their enemies was slowing. She shouted back over at Kenjiro as he called out his commands, feisty and focused on the battle- forgetting the townspeople around or the setting.

”She’s no mouse, she’s a Marill!” The one girl cheer-squad yelled ”Go Azu! Hit ‘em with a hydro pump!” She called out, pointing in the direction of Kenjiro. She had gotten so swept up in the action that she forgot to give her pokemon a target within the battle! Luckily, Azu didn’t always do /exactly/ as directed anyway, but it seemed like this time the target was any one of Ceiko, Masaru, or even Kenjiro!

As the focus punch gathered, Kaiko’s eyes flicked back over towards the water, hoping that Fiyuro hadn’t actually gone swimming off downstream. He was still a pretty new pokemon, so she wasn’t entirely sure if he would follow orders or take any chance to run off. It was hard to tell the feelings of a fish mostly made of sharp gnashing teeth.
”Uh… “ She was trying not to show the worry flicker across her face. It was hard to manage two pokemon in a battle!

Mischief sparkled in Azu’s eyes as her Trainer gave her free reign to attack whatever target she pleased. For a moment, she seemed to be seriously considering attacking Kenjiro and getting revenge on him for upsetting Kaiko - but the other Trainer was already pretty soaked, and his Pokemon were still a threat. A flurry of high-pressure water, bright blue, jetted toward Masaru, knocking the Cubchoo to the ground and shattering his concentration.

[Azu used Hydro Pump! Cubchoo lost 9 HP!]

For a moment, Ceiko looked ready to avenge her teammate; however, a sharp command from her Trainer made her back off. There was a flash of light; then, both Pokemon disappeared into their Pokeballs, which Kenjiro put back immediately. The slightly damp crowd that remained around the battleground muttered their disappointment, but if Kenjiro cared, he didn’t show it.

“You did well,” Kenjiro said, “even if you could stand to control your temper a bit better.” He glanced approvingly from Kaiko to Azu, who was nodding triumphantly, to Fiyuro, who was bobbing in the waters, waiting to see if his Trainer had anything further to be done. Kenjiro then reached into his whittling supplies and pulled out a pair of Apricorns, one black and one blue. He then reached out to hand them over to Kaiko. “There’s more where this came from, if you want to take me up on sponsorship, but I don’t mind you taking these, so long as you use ‘em well.” And trust me,” he added, “if you challenge him at the beginner level, you’ve got a fair shot against Hamada. The Shi hasn’t gotten where he is without bein’ honorable.”

With that, Kenjiro stepped back, away from Kaiko and Scraggy. The latter peered up intently at Kaiko and waved, grinning. It showed no sign of going toward her, but it also showed no sign of running. It simply watched curiously, as if waiting for Kaiko to convince it to join her.

Kaiko also had to hold back a murmur of disappointment- she was clearly winning that battle, and by backing down he had taken away her chance to show off. Though, somewhere in the back of her mind she realized that this was the most practical thing to do for both of them. There was no point in wandering around with injured or fainted pokemon, and getting trapped in a bad situation later on.

Kaiko lifted her chin up to receive the praise, but narrowed her eyes at Kenjiro. Who was he to judge whether her temper was bad or not! She felt like she was merely defending herself against his remarks, so she took no notice of his advice in that regard. As he looked over at Fiyuro, Kaiko, realized that it was probably time to put her fishy friend away, because he had done a lot already today and was only young.

”Fiyuro, good job. Return!” She held up his pokeball and a stream of light beamed him in. That was a much more portable form. She didn’t command Azu to return just yet, but she did give her an appreciative scruff of the headfluff. ”You did good too, Azu.” She reassured affectionately, then turned her focus back to Kenjiro, who was offering more advice and some apricorns.

She reached to take them, flicking her long dark ponytail over her shoulder.

”I don’t know about being sponsored. Makes me sound like some charity case.” She explained bluntly, but took the apricorns being offered. ”I will challenge Hamada though” She agreed with a nod, pocketing her prizes. She didn’t mention anything about being honourable in return.

As the scraggy looked up at her, Kaiko sighed a little. Somehow she wasn’t quite as keen on the little thing as she was before, but that was fine. She had learned a lot.

”You’re not for me. You’re going to be a gift for my sister. She fights, like you- in your style.” Kaiko explained, taking out a Net Ball and bopping the Scraggy on the head with it unceremoniously.

”Her name is Jiang. We’ll go find her after we beat Hamada.”
