Default Freyr, Beginner Capture Quest (Liam)

Morning caught the Storm Kua like a sudden wildfire, rays that should have been hidden behind a blanket of thick clouds piercing down to earth like a lance and igniting the land with bright gold rays. To Freyr, with the mud of his family’s farm still clinging to his heel, this must have seemed like a benevolent omen - one of the few sunrises that could be seen in the Storm Kua, shining down upon him so soon after he’d made his way off the mountain where he’d felt so confined. It only lasted a few moments before the clouds swallowed up the sun again, but it was enough to signify the coming of a new dawn.

It was certainly a momentous occasion. Climbing down mountains in the Storm Kua, even small ones, was no mean feat given the storms that continuously slammed the Kua. Fortunately, the Ĺskars hadn’t exactly lived an isolated lifestyle. A few safer pathways led to and from other farms, extraneous pastures for the Mareep - and even the capital city, the sprawling Yongkai.

This was, of course, not the path that Freyr had taken. Freedom and adventure weren’t waiting in a city full of merchants, cutpurse thieves, and pointlessly-deified royalty. Freyr’s path had led him down to a patch of rugged terrain, where the soil had been eroded away by constant rain, leaving behind only stone and a few plants that looked already half-dead. It wasn’t a beautiful place on its own, to be sure, but the view was remarkable. Snow-capped mountains, higher than Freyr had ventured, rose in the distance; below the bluff, valleys lay lush and strikingly green. It made the wide gray bluff seem puny by comparison.

The silence here was almost impenetrable, broken only by the sounds Freyr made. However, it wasn’t long before he heard something new - not the familiar drone of Mareep’s bleating voices or stamping hooves, but rather the scraping of branches against branches. A patch where a particularly stubborn bunch of shrubs still grew was shaking violently, as though something alive was inside, quaking with anticipation. As Freyr watched, a little red orb fell out of the bush - an Apricorn, surprisingly fresh given the state of the other flora.

Freyr's right side of his face winced every time the tattoo artist hammered her needle into his left arm. As many times as he had visited Shay and her hut halfway down the mountain, and as stoic as he tries to be, Freyr can never sit completely still as she chisels her magnum opi into his skin.

"Does this mean I'll never see you again?" Shay asked, wiping sweat off her brow as it attempted to pool around her goggles.

"Potentially," Freyr responded, not looking her in the eye. He pretended to be enraptured by other thoughts to keep him from the pain, when in reality, he didn't want to make himself vulnerable by her piercing eyes. They were a soft green with misty blue speckles, almond shaped, and lined with black lashes. If eyes were the window to a person's soul, Shay's was the most pure and beautiful Freyr had known.

But his path was set. The early hours of the day had sprung, and he needed to be far away before his family woke to his absence.

Shay finished the touch-up, wiped the inky residue away from Freyr's bicep, and sat with a sigh of relief.

"So where will you go?" Shay asked, scratching her course, bushy hair and leaving streaks of ink in the few braids that accented it.

Freyr tossed her a few gold coins with the royal house's insignia on them as he casually responded, "the less you know, the better I'd think." He looked around the straw and wood plank hut and met his Eevee's eyes.

Raikazhao, a quick and clever Eevee his family had bred for him when he was younger, casted Freyr a worried look. Freyr felt guilty for distancing himself with Shay; Zhao's eyes said so much with just a reflective glance.

"We've been friends for a long time, Shay," Freyr added, breaking his silence, "my family will come and ask you questions. Lie to them and say I told you I was going to the Forge Kua. They'll think I'll be attempting to meet up with my uncle in the Valley."

Freyr looked over to Shay, who slouched in her chair, relaxing extensively. An ornate pipe sat burning plants next to her on a cluttered table. She picked it up and took some large puffs of smoke, filling the air with a charcoal like smell that was caustic, yet enticing.

"Lying cost extra," Shay sneered. Freyr looked back at Zhao instantly to give him a stern look. Zhao, however, had suddenly found something very interesting elsewhere and avoided Freyr's glance. Freyr sighed and reached into the silky, arm hole-turned pocket of his kimono, reaching over himself with his right hand as his left arm radiated with pain. Managing to find a loose coin, he flicked it toward Shay, who caught it quickly like a Carnivine snatching an insect out from the air.

"It was good seeing ya, Canvas," Shay huffed through the smoke.

"Likewise, Needle," Freyr replied as he opened the hut and left.

Rejoining the path that led down the mountain, with Zhao at his side, Freyr dug through his pocket to find the outlining of the Dusk Ball his uncle had sent him. After a minute of searching awkwardly with his right hand, he felt the outline of the patterned Pokeball.

He stopped, bent down, and let out his newest Pokemon: a Treecko. The green lizard Pokemon blinked and rubbed his eyes-- Freyr had woken up the grass Pokemon as the sun began to break on the horizon.

"Come here, Sin," Freyr said as he held out his right arm for the Treecko to climb. Zhao yipped quietly in excitement to see his newest companion. Sinhar Aja, looked up solemnly at Freyr, his glacier blue eyes, lightning struck hair, and sharp, yet amicable demeanor gave Sin confidence in his new owner. He grasped Freyr's hand and ran up and around his arm, coming to rest on Freyr's right shoulder.

Freyr smiled at the little lizard's nuanced naďvety as Sin looked around their surroundings. Freyr could imagine the Storm Kua and its many pillar-like green mountains, misted by almost constant storm clouds, would be different than the thicketed forests of the Valley Kua. It could also just be natural curiosity as Sin was fairly young at only one level.

Continuing down the mountain, in sort of a hurry too now the day had broken, Freyr found himself on a rougher patch. The padding underneath his wrapped feet were doing their job of protecting him from injuries, but Freyr wondered how long they would last him and when and where he might get new ones.

Zhao and Sin, however, were awestruck by the magnificent rays the sun poured down onto the mountainous surroundings. Freyr took notice of them and saw the anomaly too.

"Don't get used to that sight," Freyr said to Sin, "it's rare for the sun to pierce the storm clouds with its light so vividly." Sin nodded while keeping an opened mouth and wide eyes on the scenery. Zhao tried to as well, but was following Freyr by his side down the rocky path and needed to see where he was going as stones poked through the ground frequently.

Soon, Freyr found himself in a particularly quiet moment. No distant waterfalls, or rivers, no birds singing to each other, no bleatings from waking Mareep or calls from his family-- no. It was silent except for the air that breezed in between the mountains. Freyr stopped to take in the moment, but it was disrupted quickly by the rustling of something in a bush nearby.

Zhao hopped forward, getting into a wide stance as he softly growled. Freyr walked over behind Zhao, not wanting him to get himself into trouble or harms way this soon into their journey. Cautiously, Freyr sat Sin down behind Zhao as he approached the bush to investigate-- was it an animal? a Pokemon reading itself to pounce? an injured creature in need? the wind?? Freyr took some time to reach out and part the leaves, leaning in on his right side and blocking his Pokemon from the bush; he braced himself to be attacked, readying for the worse.

Careful hands reached out; Freyr peeled the branches of the shrubbery away with a certain and steady grip. As a result of his slowness, the cream-furred Pokemon in the bushes barely noticed him, too preoccupied with the hard-skinned apricorn that it was futilely trying to bite through. However, Freyr only got a brief glimpse of this tableau before the Pokemon realized that it had been discovered. With a squeak, it popped the apricorn into its mouth, cheek bulging awkwardly as it sprang out of the bushes.

At the sight of two unfamiliar Pokemon, however, the little critter let out a pitiful squeak of fright, stopping dead with its mouth so agape that its apricorn tumbled to the ground. Freyr was able to get a good look at it, now - the Pokemon’s cross-shaped tail and big red ears revealed it quite clearly as a Plusle. A man of Freyr’s pastoral background would likely to be able to recognize its species; Plusle and their Minun allies often snuck into barns, capitalizing on their small size to steal food and using their Electric-type speed to evade all but the most determined mousers.

Though most Plusle didn’t go anywhere without a Minun in tow and vice versa. This one was most definitely on its own - and what’s more, it looked half-starved, its fur ragged and its body scrawny. Its posture was submissive, ears laid back as it crouched down and watched Zhao and Sinhar warily.

However, Freyr was there, too, and the Plusle seemed to remember this after a moment. This one seemed to understand the concept of Trainers pretty well, because it turned back to Freyr, though it still kept casting backward glances at Zhao and Sinhar. It seemed to consider something for a moment, then it gathered the Apricorn by the base of the bush along with the one it had dropped. It held up the two orbs to Freyr, head tilted questioningly. It didn’t seem interested in Freyr’s Pokeballs, though - it seemed as if it was asking for help.

Freyr examined the little bunny Pokémon as it struggled with the apricorn. Only a few seconds passed when the Pokémon realized it was being watched and jumped from the bushes. Freyr startled back, unsure if it was rabid and leap at him or his own Pokémon. But instead the wild, electric rabbit weakly looked up at him.

Instantly recognizing the Pokémon as a common Plusle, Freyr noticed a few interesting things: the lack of sheen on its coat, the minimal amount of energy it had jumping from the bush, the skin outlying its ribs-- this Plusle was starving. Holding up two red apricorns now, the Plusle seemed to ask Freyr for some help.

Freyr stood, remembering times when he and Zhao would chase Plusle and Minun out from their food storages, see them frolic in the fields where his Mareep would graze; it reminded Freyr of the comfort of home and his recent abandonment of it. He did want to stick around forever, but he felt for the needy Plusle. Kneeling down on one leg, Freyr reached out and took the two red apricorns from the Plusle.

"Zhao, come here," he said, calling upon his trusty fox Pokémon. He knew Zhao's instinct would be to chase the Plusle like they always had, but this was a new path Freyr was creating, a knew adventure with different rules. Out here, there was no need to be so ruthless to this Pokémon, and he wanted Zhao to understand that.

The Eevee came up to the Plusle, sniffing the air and keeping a good eye on the electric Pokémon. "It needs our help, Zhao," Freyr said as he began digging into his pocket. Pulling out a plump Haban berry, Freyr offered it to the Plusle. "Here," he said comfortingly, "eat this, buddy, it's juicy and real sweet."
    @VeloJello;

((OOC: Sorry! Took the apricorns! Also, I'm interested in Plusle, but I would like to see what other Pokémon Freyr could encounter-- Plusle would be a neat addition, but there are some others I think Freyr would be interested in-- just fyi!))

With a loud, cheerful squeak, the Plusle did a little dance; the transaction had been completed, and the human didn’t seem inclined to attack it or catch it. For a moment, Zhao’s approach caused the Plusle to shrink, nervous once more, but between Zhao’s lack of aggression and the tasty berry that was being offered, the Plusle’s nerves were dying down. For a moment, the Plusle eyed the gift suspiciously; this hadn’t been part of the plan… but it was hungry. Quick as a flash, it reached forward and snatched the berry, before digging into the juicy fruit. Despite the berry’s thick rind, Plusle tore into it with a vengeance, not stopping until there was nothing left but a reddish-black pit.

“Plus.” Having nourished itself once more, Plusle seemed a bit more vital. With a few quick flicks of its paws, it wiped the red pulp off its snout; it then turned back to Freyr. “Plus plus,” it held a paw up to its eyes, as if it were looking around, “Sul plusle,” and then held both paws up to one cheek to conceal the bars of the plus marking on its cheek, leaving only one line like a minus sign. Were it not for the red backdrop, it would have looked exactly like a Minun’s marking.

After giving Freyr a good chance to examine its cheek, it sat down heavily, sighed, and gave him a sad-eyed look. It then turned to make its way across the bluff, little paws padding quietly along, but it moved far more slowly than it could’ve, almost as if it was hoping to be followed.

Before it even got the chance to get out of Freyr’s line of sight, however, it stopped - a few feet ahead of it was a scraggly, old-looking nest. It was big enough that it could have belonged to an Altaria and her clutch of Swablus, but there didn’t seem to be any residents.

    Key phrase being "seem".

The Plusle sidled up to the nest, poked its head in, and then recoiled - in the half-light of the once-more overcast sky, a faint flash of pink energy was visible flashing out of the nest. It was common for Exeggcute to take up residence in the abandoned nests of wild Pokemon - and as the Plusle had just found out, they defended their territory zealously. From his height, Freyr would be able to easily see the gang of pink eggs glaring up at him from their stolen nest.

Watching the Plusle ravage the berry was entertaining if nothing else. Freyr gave a soft smile as he saw the electric rabbit rejuvenate so quickly. It began squeaking at him and showing its cheeks with the red plus symbol, covering them slightly to create a minus.

"Oh, you missing your Minun friend?" Freyr asked, knowing they usually come in pairs. The magnetic bunny sad dolefully, pouting at its situation, and sighed. Freyr grew a tad concerned for the Plusle-- maybe something bad has happened to its friend? But quickly Freyr remembered he was only down the mountain his family resided on and realized he couldn't solve every problem he crossed, especially those so close to his now former home.

Clouds had finally returned to their former glory in the sky, casting shade and gray over the land. The sun may have been gone, but its light remained to illuminate the mountains. Freyr stood tall, Sin holding on with a gecko-like grip. The Plusle had got up and was now bouncing over the mountainside, seemingly wanting Freyr to follow.

The want to continue his escape was pulling Freyr away from the situation, but his empathy held him anchored just enough, until--

    Gasp!

The electric bunny had poked its head into a large, twiggy nest. Leaves sprouted disjointedly from the pile of thrush, and six, round and pink objects jittered offensively inside. Exeggcute! They were well known to Freyr; a dangerous Pokémon to encounter in the wild. They're easily angered and defensive. Stories are abound of Exeggcute hypnotizing their offenders into walking off cliffs or into ravines. Freyr has even seen Alolan-Exeggutor climb the mountains before, making their nests and laying their Exeggcute before returning to the beachy shores.

The Plusle was injured and out cold, in the mercy of the Exeggcute. His empathetic anchor now weighed a ton; there was no way he was leaving the Plusle by itself.

"Come on, Zhao!" Freyr commanded, "let's show Sin how to battle and help out this little guy!" Zhao barked sharply in response; squinted and determined eyes fixated on the Exeggcute, the fox Pokémon bent low in an attack bow.

"Don't look at the Exeggcute too closely now, Zhao," Freyr commanded, "they'll hypnotize you, okay? Leap up and hit them with a Shadow Ball attack!"

Sin's grip tightened as the situation escalated, but Zhao was a pro. The Eevee jumped up into the air, focused spiritual energy near the front of its mouth, and at the apex of his leap Zhao barked out the condensed, black and violet ball of ghostly energy toward the pack of mischievous psychic eggs. Zhao landed, and with teeth bare and low growl, shifted his eyes this way and that to avoid any possible tricks from the psychedelic bunch.
    @VeloJello;

(Woo! Male Exeggcute please if you want to know which gender I'd prefer for it-- and yea, I'm interested in capturing it! Probably the only other mon I'd capture outside of this would be a Bronzor, just fyi, but woo! Alright!!)

One of the prime reasons that Eevee were so coveted in the region of Onmyo was the variety of abilities that they held. When Zhao launched himself into the air, strong paws throwing him forward, he summoned spectral power together practically in defiance of his own typing. The Exeggcute, so secure and smug in its nest, wouldn’t have thought twice about the little fox ordinarily. It could just send this second interloper flying the way it had thrown the Plusle -

A high-pitched but powerful bark echoed across the rocks as Zhao sent the orb of darkness flying toward his enemy. Exeggcute folded under the attack, letting out an eerie screech like nails scraping slate. The landing was a little hard on Zhao, but he landed on all four paws - and like his trainer had commanded him, he kept his eyes on the ground just in front of Exeggcute, not meeting any of its many eyes for even a second.

[Zhao used Shadow Ball! Exeggcute took 7 points of damage!]

Exeggcute wasn’t by any means done, though. With a flash of light, it warped out of its nest, ready to face its attacker head-on, its cry of rage eerily distorted by the teleportation. Bright green light blared in front of each of its mouths, and a cluster of brown seeds rocketed toward Zhao. The Eevee was tough, but he couldn’t help but letting out a little whimper. That was going to leave a bruise.

[Exeggcute used Bullet Seed! Zhao took 3 points of damage!]

The Plusle, meanwhile, was stirring - and when it heard Exeggcute’s scream, it bolted upright. Quick-footed, it scampered back toward Freyr, out of the fray of the big scary Pokemon fighting. It exchanged a sympathetic glance with Sinhar - no doubt it felt that the frightened Treecko was a kindred spirit.
