Default Kaiko's Beginner Capture Quest (Dec 27)

    #1

We pick up where we last left off, with Kaiko deciding it was high time for her to get out and see the world. She headed to the docks and was presented with the choice of investigating some rowdy wingulls, joining a larger ship loading cargo, or a smaller fishing boat.

Kaikos long dark hair swished from side to side as she looked at the various scenes at the dock, hands on her hips. Her Azurill was tucked away safely in its ball, because for some reason the darn thing didn’t like mornings, and after also saying goodbye to her mother, it had retired for a longer sleep-in. The morning is when everything happens, you silly bubbleblob! You should have listened to me! Kaiko internally grumbled at it.

The wingull hanging around was fairly usual- though not in such numbers. She narrowed her eyes at the crowd of them, not really wanting to get involved, but knowing they were usually making pests of themselves. For now, she’d leave them be. They’re probably just fighting over scraps…And if I somehow fail at getting on any ship, I’ll yell and chase them all off to let off some steam She smirked a little, enjoying the thought.

Right, time to make a choice. She thought, pursing her lips as she looked once again between the two ships. The bigger one probably wouldn’t notice an extra person aboard… but they look busy. Might not even be able to speak to the captain… Probably would get pushed aside… She mused, losing confidence, and turned her attention to the smaller boat.

“Ahoy!” She called out to the group of fishermen, waving and striding over confidently. If they were locals, it was possible they might even look familiar! “Need an extra crewmember for the day? I’ll work for free!” She gave them a toothy grin, wondering how else she could be useful. ”I just wanna get out of town for a bit, y’know?”

The three fishermen looked up from their tasks to find the source of the call. They spotted Kaiko and considered her for a moment. They turned to look at each other, and then the apparent leader of the expedition turned to her.

"We are down a man. One of our crew caught cold the other day and is out of commission. We could use the extra hand, especially if it's free of charge. Just so long as you promise to keep out of trouble and do as your told. If you can do that, you are welcome to join us. I'm Lee, and this is Jan and Zeke. What's your name, lass?"

"I'm Kaiko! Thank you for letting me join you."

Kaiko joined the fishermen and helped them finish their prep work before they all set out on their journey. The wind was favorable today, so they made good time to their first stop for the day. They weighed anchor and started to gather their nets.

"We're going to begin casting our nets here. They'll probably be too much for you, so we'll take care of it for now. Feel free to grab a pole or even go for a dip. Just stay on the other side of the boat so you don't get caught in our nets."

What will Kaiko do to pass the time?

Kaiko had been uncharacteristically polite as she entered the vessel, feeling a little nervous and trying to be extra nice. She didn't particularly recognise any of the names she was told, and didn't bother committing them to memory either. Untying from the dock, cleaning and clearing different nets and cages as they sailed along, there didn't seem to be much idle chatter going on. That was fine. These people are transport and work, nothing more. she told herself.

After a short while she felt her apricorn ball rattle a little and she opened it up to let her Azurill out. In the bright morning sun it looked considerably more well rested than its owner. Kaiko gave it a little glare as if warning the chubby thing to behave itself, and helped the fishermen gather in their nets. When the first round was done and they said they were casting out again, Kaiko frowned slightly when Lee spoke up.

"Too much for me? What, putting nets into the water can't be that much harder than bringing them in, surely!" She protested, feeling slighted. "If I'm here to act like the replacement crewmember then shouldn't I be doing that work too?" The thought of slacking off and going for a swim seemed unfair, given that they said they needed the extra hand and she had agreed to it.
If the captain told her off, or got angry at her for challenging his descision to not have her work, then fine, she would probably just go fishing- sulkily attempt to contribute one fish at a time. But she didn't like being treated like a child.

"Bwahahaha! I'll admit, you've got spirit lass. If you think you can help haul the nets, you are welcome to try. Just be warned, these nets can weigh up to 200 pounds, and these Pokemon wriggle like no one's business. You'll need a strong and steady grip if you don't want to end up in the water with the rest of the Pokemon you'll just have released. Jan, start prepping the next net, looks like she'll be handling this haul with Zeke."

The fisherman called Jan, looks over, raises and eyebrow, then shrugs as he walks towards the stern to fit the next net.

Zeke turns and sizes up Kaiko once more.

"Hmm, well, if you think you've got it in you. At least you're not a natural slacker like some people I know."

He shoots daggers from his eyes towards Jan's back, who promptly turns around and lobs a piece of bait at Zeke's head. They both crack up laughing.

"Alright, alright, calm down. We have work to do, ya bums. Alright, miss, let's get ready to haul 'er in."

Kaiko nods and moves into position. The captain shows her the proper stance and the best grip to use while pulling up the net. He steps back and peers over the side, inspecting the strain on the net, which would indicate how much they've caught so far.

"Alright lads and lass, bring it up!"

Kaiko and Zeke heave with all their might, pulling up the net, hand over hand. It is indeed quite heavy, more so than Kaiko had initially anticipated. But she isn't as weak as others might believe. She struggles a bit, but through sheer force of will, manages to haul the net up to the deck successfully. However, just as she's getting the last bit over the gunwale of the boat, she slips on the bait thrown to the deck earlier, and she releases hold of the net for the briefest moment, allowing one of the captive Pokemon to escape onto the deck.

"POLIWAAAAAG!" yells the escapee as it scampers up to the bow of the ship behind Kaiko. The captain lets loose a roar of laughter.

"HAHAA! Almost perfect. Not bad at all for your first try, lassie. See if you can't round up our little getaway. It seems just your type."

Kaiko felt indignant when she was warned by Lee about the weights, but he seemed to do it in good spirits, rather than teasing her, so her stubbornness dissolved a little. When Jan raised an eyebrow at her and Zeke sized her up, however, she felt challenged all over again.
The exchange between the two sailors confused her, though, and she was unsure what it meant. Are they fighting? Was one telling a lie, or do they just throw bait for fun? Is this an in-joke? She mused, looking from one to the other.
Kaikos Azurill, however, seemed enthused by the bait throwing, and tried to grab and throw a tiny shrimp which had slipped through a net. “Azu! AAaa! Zuuu!” It giggled, and Kaiko tried to ignore the sounds of tiny feet and a tiny shrimp flipping about on the boat as she moved into position and hauled in the net with Zeke.

Everything was going just fine (or at least she wouldn’t admit it was a struggle) until she slipped on the piece of bait that Azurill had been throwing around.
    ”Gah!”
Kaiko whipped around to give her pokemon a glare as she regained her balance, and Azurill looked somewhat apologetic- but was focused on something just beyond her. A poliwag! Kaiko was a little confused about whether the fishermen wanted the creature back in the net or back in the sea, so she hesitated a little before trying to give Azurill instructions.
”Azurill! Use.. uh… Bounce? Bounce it back towards the net!”

Azurill made a happy noise and spun around to face its opponent. It raised up its tail, then brought it swinging back down to strike the deck, sending the little Pokemon soaring into the air. The little Poliwag looks up, then begins blowing as many bubbles as it can manage, covering itself, and the deck in hundreds of slippery, shimmery bubbles.

As Azurill reaches the apex of its bounce, it spins round to aim for its target on the ground, but is faced with a sea of bubbles, from which the Poliwag is nearly indistinguishable. The Azurill tries its best despite this new challenge, and chooses a spot to land. It surges into the mass of bubbles and just manages to clip the Poliwag, sending both Pokemon sliding away from each other across the slick deck. The Poliwag manages to regain its footing, but Azurill is still slipping around. It may be difficult for it to move across the deck while the bubbles are still around.

Kaiko hears Captain Lee call out to her from the midships.
"Good effort, lass. Best be careful now, that Poliwag seems to be quite clever. If yer trying to catch it, maybe the best course of action is to win it over, rather than battle it with brute force. Otherwise, see if you can't scare him off, he's makin a mess of me deck."

Kaiko swished her legs around in the bubbles, and held onto the side of the boat to keep her own footing, too! Despite slipping all over the place, Azurill still seemed to be having fun- she wasn’t actually told to do very much very often except ‘don’t cause trouble’ so this was a welcome change.
Kaiko, however, was floundering somewhat, and looked distinctly distressed. Clamperl diving usually dealt with creatures while they were already in the sea, not accidentally hopping out on the deck and causing a ruckus! She had a brief moment of wondering if it would be better to do this fight while treading water in the ocean, but then decided it would probably look too weird to the other fishermen around. Plus, She added to herself They have nets in there, it wouldn’t be safe.

”He is quite clever!” Kaiko yelled back at Lee ”But I’ve already got myself a bubbly ball of trouble!” She called out, and grinned at Azurill. Hey, maybe she could get the hang of this friendly insult thing.
When the captain pointed out what a mess this whole scene was making, she felt a bit embarrassed, and resolved to scrub it all down later. Even though the mess was mostly made by a wild pokemon, it was her fault that the wild one was even running around, and therefore her responsibility.

”Azu, Water Gun that thing over the edge of the boat!” She instructed, hoping that Azurill could aim steadily and well enough. At the very least, a jet of water might clear away the bubbles.

As Azurill regained its footing, it turned to face the Poliwag, now on the opposite side of the deck from the Azurill. In between them, the deck was slick with bubbles, so using a ranged move was an excellent choice, as it meant Azurill wouldn't need to try to move across the deck.

As Kaiko called out the next move, Azurill nodded and took a deep breath, readying its attack. The Poliwag, realizing what was about to happen, began to panic and attempted to move out of the way of the incoming barrage. However, the deck was too slick, and it fell flat on its face! Azurill released a fierce jet of water right at the prone Poliwag, and it shot back across the deck towards the side, slipping and sliding all along until it crashed against the side and flipped up and over the edge of the ship. A resounding success!

Kaiko and her partner had successfully taken care of the intruder Pokemon to great effect, however there still remained the mess of bubbles to clean up.

She heard a drawn out and impressed sounding whistle from behind her where the fishermen were finishing up.

"Well I'll be darned. Took care of that little bugger right quick, didn't she lads?" Said Lee to the others.

"Not bad, kid. Not bad at all." Said Jan.

Zeke gave her a curt nod and turned back to his work.

"Alright, catch!" Lee said as he tossed her a mop. "If ya can, just mop up the bubbles. Shouldn't need to worry about using any soap or water, since it's already bubbly! HAHA! Once you finish with that, we should be ready to cast off our next net, if you'd give us a hand with it. Hopefully, now that you've a more practiced hand, there'll be less escapees." He winked at her and chuckled to himself, turning back to finishing up with the earlier haul.

Kaiko grinned at how well the water gun had worked- honestly, she might have asked her Azurill to use something more physical if Captain Lee hadn’t piped up and given her a few more seconds to think. Maybe it was better to have people around during a battle- it was nice and easy to follow the Captains directions, at least. That said, knocking a scoundrel off a boat might not be classed as a regular battle.

At the low whistle, Azurill seemed to nod and bask in the compliment, while Kaiko took it and stashed it away for thinking about later. Being called both a kid and saying she did well seemed like a backhanded compliment, and she didn’t want to contemplate on whether the captain was being patronizing. Zeke’s reaction seemed the most relateable, so she also nodded at her crewmembers in response (but couldn’t hide a slight victorious smile).

When the mop was thrown across at her, she caught it deftly and immediately got to work.
”Will do, Capt’n Lee” She affirmed, bending her back under the sun.
Mopping up the deck was a little annoying, particularly with the bobbing boat sloshing the bubbles around and Azurill occasionally sliding past, bouncing on its tail and gibbering happily to itself. It was true that the job didn’t take long though, and then everyone was back in position, ready to be pulling up nets again.

Kaiko shot a stern glare at her pokemon before making sure her feet were firmly planted before she began pulling in the net. This time around, she would try hard not to make the same mistake.
