“But why does it have to be me, just why,” a young voice drawled out, “did you do this, Shalulu?”

He lay out there clad in black rolls of fabric. Vibrant turquoise strands wrapped around his shoulders, his waist, the ankles that twirled about in the swirling, clear water. Empty black eyes stared up at the aurora waves drowning a sunset sky. Little waves lapped at the edges of his vision, his black hair drenched in the water. It was nice to float here… to feel weightless, cradled by the Pokémon that lazily let him slip into the water as retribution for his words.

Conan coughed as the water overcame him, attempting to act hurt in response to the Pokémon. Lanky legs kicked the serene, cool water. In truth, he had nothing to worry about. Although the bottom of this river stretched onwards in a bottomless abyss, Shalulu would have caught him even before he knew himself that he was in danger. The Pokémon and him worked like partners that way; Shalulu always guarded him, and in return, Conan offered the Pokémon endless companionship in their torn world.

“Because you are human like her, Young One,” the Kingdra answered back, nuzzling the boy’s shoulder with the rubbery snout. “She has a thirst for knowledge and is human as well. What ails you about this task?” The voice bombinated from deep within the Pokémon, a low-range command that still managed to be gentle. It was the voice that ordered the Pokémon of many Seas on the PokeWorld; it was the voice that sang Conan to sleep when he was a child.

“Don’t trust ‘em,” he shot out cold. His head tilted back up, the water threatening to spill into his mouth. His whole world upside down. He wasn’t supposed to be here, on this PokeWorld. But the humans never wanted him, at least not his own parents or anyone who would have cared about him - “Don’t want ‘em here.” Primitive words came out faster than he could think about them.

“Go, child. You will learn something too, maybe even more than her.” At that, the Kingdra scooped the boy’s tender body back onto his back. Conan hugged the rigged surfaces of the navy scales, trying to reach both arms around the creature’s body until his fingertips met on the other side of the blue muscled mass. But alas, Conan was still too young, too small; and this was why Shalulu got to make all the decisions. He was older, wiser, and would always take care of him.

His eyes were now set on the whirlpool gathering speed at the far end of their side of the Selefeine River. Shalulu’s eyes, slits of burning red, darkened as he worked on psychically spinning the whirlpool, transforming it from a tiny bump to the roaring vortex. The surface of the water crinkled with the impact of it like a sheet of paper being punctured from the other side. And that glowing, pulsating, other side was the side that held the woman he was supposed to find and bring here -

Conan said nothing as he stood on the back of Shalulu, careful not to slide as his knees pulled upwards. “I’m proud of you, Conan,” the figure gently praised. “Remember to be kind, in all things you do and with all the people you meet.”

Conan couldn’t be moved to return the sentiment. He merely focused his gaze on the portal, steadying his stance that descended into a crouch. With one hand washing over the holster of his knife, the other hand shot outwards and balanced him. The next second, Conan long-jumped from Shalulu’s back to the very portal, his body descending into the white foam and vaporized nothingness that wafted upwards from the water magic. Shalulu stared on as the portal cleared and the water returned to its calm state. The pink shell on his forehead, tucked between ribbon-like fins that weaved their way upwards on his temples, pulsated with the boy’s heartbeat. Ah yes, from here he would be able to watch the boy’s every moment, to see him safely bring back the woman who craved knowledge that would perhaps one day save their universe…

Safety was the last thing on Conan’s mind. A scar in the air above the URPG Space Center split open, allowing Conan to jump straight onto metal and concrete. “Ugh,” he thought, abhorring the smooth cold of it all. Each step sent shockwaves up to his knees with the hard impact. This was nothing compared to what they had on PokeWorld. Leave it to the humans and PokeSouls to mess everything up. With that sentiment, the boy sprinted across the Space Station, avoiding any and all contact with the people who roamed about in the false sunshine. Shalulu taught him to be discrete. Shalulu told him to be kind.

But he hated this. Nearing the entrance of Mon’s School, Conan prepared himself for another leap as he soared through a window of the impressive center of learning and camaraderie and discovery and all those lies. Air whooshed past him. His blood in his ear, his heart in his throat. Get this mess over with already. He didn’t care that school was still in session today. He didn’t care to be kind or gentle. He didn’t care about reading the names of the teacher’s posted outside of their doors in handcrafted, shiny chrome, not that he could read at all.

He burst through the door, leaving behind splintered wood and glass. Sharp crunches resounded as his shoes stepped over the debris. Not a heart beat missed. “You. Lady. You are coming with me. To learn something.” His words curt, his gaze not quite focused, Conan crossed his arms. He didn’t care if he had the right room. He would do this to every classroom if he had to. Shalulu could slap him around later; he just wanted this to be over with.

i've feared the deepest darkest secrets that live inside me
all of my strength, all of my might, will go into this to take back my life
tomorrow is gone, i'll start living for today. i'll never stop the fighting and i'll take it all away

Her last class for the day had wrapped up, and she was able to let out a sigh of relief. Some days, she absolutely loved teaching. Today just felt like a drag, maybe because she hadn't felt like she was still learning something. Her favorite days of teaching were the days where she was learning with her students. Today's lesson had focused on communicating with PokeSouls, and though she wasn't able to give much of a demonstration because Kyuu wasn't exactly the kindest PokeSoul out there, it worked for a little bit. Kyuu was never one for public speaking anyways, and she definitely wouldn't have made a good teacher.

Still, Kumiko made do with what she could.

She had just finished packing her things when a loud bang made her jump and knock some papers on the floor. Her attention was immediately brought to the door, and she saw her door had turned into pieces of wood and glass. A young boy was there, his shoes making the debris from the door crunch with each step he took.

"You. Lady. You are coming with me. To learn something," the boy said. She hesitated at the curtness of his voice, but she felt compelled to go. She wouldn't mind gaining a little more knowledge, and her classes were done for the day. Kumiko scribbled a quick apology note about the door, briefly explaining the situation, and left it on the desk for someone else to find. She picked up the papers that had fallen, put them into her bag that she'd slung over her shoulder, and stepped away from the desk.

    "Lead the way then."

The scene of a beautiful classroom assaulted Conan’s every sense; he hated the quiet peace and the reassurance of knowledge and growth tucked away in every motivational poster, every book tucked away, every empty desk begging for a student to take its place. The air smelled fine, so clean and neutralized unlike the dank and raw nature he was used to immersing himself in. He nearly suffocated on just how clean this air was, just how normal this classroom looked, proving to himself in that one moment just how not normal he was -

And then she spoke! Conan whipped his head up at her, shifting one leg slightly as he stood up to face her entirely. His shoe scrunched against the glass he left behind, and he felt his heart picking up two paces. Wasn’t she going to fight him? What business did he have barging into her classroom for her to simply accept him? The thought of his own aggression burned him and he wanted a reason to pummel something, to assuage that darkness permeating every fiber of his being -

“Sure.” The band over his face muffled his voice, yet that single word darted out of him, crisp and cruel. “You Kumiko?” he asked nonchalantly, already turning his back to her as he began a brisk walk outside. That crisp walk quickly crescendoed into a sprint as he bolted outside of the hallway and back into the air of the space station. He wanted to blur the classrooms, the lockers, and the eccentric colors of school all together until they became one dirty smudge against his vision. He couldn’t stand to be here for one second longer, and nearly forgot the purpose of his mission. “Don’t fall behind!” he barked out to the woman who he hoped trailed him.

“I can’t believe you’d wanna teach here,” he muttered, “because this place sucks!” He really hadn’t meant to say it, but it happened, and there was no way to take it back now!

Whoever this kid was, he hadn't even bothered to introduce himself. And yet, he knew her name. How did he know her name? She hadn't told him. Was he some kind of psychic? It felt like there was so much to learn about this boy, though perhaps she should start with his name

Kumiko followed him out of the classroom, and the boy was walking briskly. She was able to keep up with him, but then he broke into a run and she had to start running to keep up with him. "Hey, wait up!" she called out. "What's your name? How did you know my name?"

He never answered her. He was ahead of her. He'd started running before her, and she wasn't exactly the fastest runner around. Running was never her strong suit, and it wasn't Kyuu's either or she'd have the Meowstic take over and do the running. Kumiko could still see him though, and she could hear him too.

"I can’t believe you’d wanna teach here," he muttered. "Because this place sucks!"

She had to disagree with that, but she didn't want to alert him to having heard him. Kumiko felt a little wary about this boy, whoever he was. He knew her name without her even telling him, and he'd broke into her classroom. Who was this boy? Why did he want to see her? Where was he leading her to? As she ran after the boy, she realized that she was just following him blindly. She had no idea what she was getting into. For all she knew, this boy could be leading her into a trap.

"Where are we going?" she called out to him.

Conan breathed evenly through his nose even as his heart slammed itself against his ribcage. It seemed to spurt “stop stop!” with every step further he took, only driving himself deeper into the heart of campus as he rushed to ironically get out of here! Kumiko’s words became blurred to his mind as his mission itself became warped: was it get out of this school, or escort this woman back to his claimed home planet?... A thought suddenly leaped into his head and he skidded to a mad stop!

“Wait!” he exclaimed, nearly doubling over, arms flailing as he caught himself before he would have clambered down to the concrete! His head whipped over to Kumiko as he shouted, “Where’s your waterfall?” His eyes grew wide.

Waterfall. The word slipped in and out of his mind on a tide of dubiety. “Uhm... “ he crossed his arms, reaching a hand to scratch his head. “You know, that thing you humans drink from. Uhm. Us humans.” He felt a blush crawl its way up his neck, threatening to burn through the black cloth he wore! “We need it to get back, water I mean, and then I’ll know exactly where to go from there.” The word water fountain never entered his vocabulary before he left the planet as a baby.

The eternal darkness of space drowned out everything above and below except for the white stars flashing at them. Conan lost himself for a minute in his stare upwards, burying his shame in the perpetual darkness which would no doubt take his folly and fling it a million light years away. The columns of the school rose high and proud, jutting out as it to challenge the idea of limitless space and the nothing that lay beyond; because here, humans and PokeSouls somehow got along, found an education together, worked and played together as one society -

With a snap of his head, Conan sighed and let his arms fall to his side. Nope! What a silly thought! He preferred the blue sky and the lawless chaos of PokeWorld that he belonged to. No exceptions! Even so, she was human, and he himself was one of the very few humans he knew, so… Shalulu’s words rang through his head with a clarity like a bell at that moment.

“Conan.” The word like a peace offering passed through his mouth too quickly. “I’ll explain how I know your name, but it’s a long story. Just take me to your waterfall and I’ll tell you what you need to know. Where we’re going… you could call it the greatest place you’d never have the fortune of knowing on Earth.” A grin contoured his face under the cloth; he felt like he had simultaneously said too much and yet not enough about the glory of the PokeWorld. Would she understand him? Could he get her to understand?...

i've feared the deepest darkest secrets that live inside me
all of my strength, all of my might, will go into this to take back my life
tomorrow is gone, i'll start living for today. i'll never stop the fighting and i'll take it all away

The boy -- he had introduced himself as Conan -- stopped suddenly, and Kumiko was able to catch up to him. She watched him nearly fall over as he stopped, but he was able to catch and steady himself with no assistance from her. Good thing too, Kumiko probably wouldn't have caught up to him in time.

"Where’s your waterfall?" he shouted. The level of his voice caught her off guard a bit; she was still getting used to him screaming, and her more sensitive hearing thanks to Kyuu didn't help at all. If this kid kept screaming like the way he was, she was probably going to be fighting a headache for days.

"Uhm... You know, that thing you humans drink from. Uhm. Us humans," he said, blushing. "We need it to get back, water I mean, and then I’ll know exactly where to go from there."

Whoever this Conan boy was, he wasn't from around here, yet he was aware of the Space Station somehow. Was he a new PokeSoul that was trying to get home? No, she doubted that. She would've been aware of a new PokeSoul coming into the school; the administration would've told her. He was just a lost boy trying to get home, but he needed a waterfall.

She looked around for a moment. As a Psychic type PokeSoul, Kyuu couldn't really conjure water, and if she was going to be honest, Kyuu didn't even really like water that much to begin with, unless she was drinking it. Even if she could conjure it, she doubted Kyuu would enjoy it. Now that she thought about it, she doubted Kyuu would like where they were going regardless, but the Meowstic inside her remained silent for the time being.

"The closest thing to a waterfall I can think of is a water fountain," she told Conan. "There's one a short walk from here, come on."

She led the way towards the water fountain. It really was just a short walk away. Down the hallway and around a corner, and it was just down that hallway once they'd turned the corner.

"I’ll explain how I know your name, but it’s a long story. Just take me to your waterfall and I’ll tell you what you need to know. Where we’re going… you could call it the greatest place you’d never have the fortune of knowing on Earth," Conan said. She supposed it would all work out; she would take him to the waterfall, he would tell her how he knew her and take her to "the greatest place she'd never have the fortune of knowing on Earth," wherever that was. Hopefully it truly was fascinating and worth all of this trouble.

They arrived at the water fountain, and Kumiko pressed on the button for a moment to get the water stream flowing to show Conan that they were indeed at what he called a "waterfall." When she let go, the water stopped. "Will this be good enough for you to use?"

Conan burned red! He was grateful in that moment for the black cloth covering demure features, but still felt the blush crawl its way up the back of his neck, spreading outwards to boyish cheekbones. “Damn me,” he thought, his limbs shaking something silly as he followed the polite teacher across the hallway. He realized then that she truly was a teacher: calm, patient, and if what he heard of the stories from Shalulu was true, a teacher was someone who dealt with unruly little kids like him with the utmost compassion. He felt shame then.

“Uhm, thanks I guess,” he muttered, kicking at nothing with his boot when they finally got to the water fountain. She named the machine for him before demonstrating its power with a simple push of a button. He didn’t think he could blush more but somehow did so anyway, feeling the blush brush through him like an overheated rake! The stream of water that sprouted from the machine gurgled at him in perfect mocking fashion. “This is stupid,” Conan began, sighing as he held his head up in resignation, “and I’m stupid! I’m sorry for wasting your time!” He bowed then, not yet realizing that he should defer to the older woman before him, but rather out of realization for his faulty attitude and behavior. “This is the worst kidnapping I’ve honestly ever done, Shalulu…” he muttered a bit too loudly to himself before snapping up.

“This will do. Thanks lady!” He stepped forward to the fountain, pushing his finger to the button. The cold steel met the pad of his thumb and he shook with his reflection in the thin sliver of water. Without another second to waste, he dabbed his two first fingers into the water! Pinching the top of the water’s arc, he breathed in as their point of contact glowed a soft turquoise. The water gushed as he expanded it so that the stream of water grew from an inch’s width to a foot within a few seconds. “This is usually faster with a waterfall…” he muttered over his shoulder like a punk to Kumiko, not one to admit that his ego directly played into his ability to make portals out of water. He swallowed his next sassy words as he kept expanding the stream. It grew to a meter’s diameter before he ranked the stream out of the water fountain!

Holding his breath, Conan’s eyes grew as he balanced the water hovering above his palms. He swore he was about to have some sort of incident by taking his thumb off the water fountain’s button, but he wanted to look cool in front of Kumiko and felt like he had done so! “Ha! There it is!” he exclaimed joyously before switching his gaze back to her. The water splurted out of the sides with his inattention, splashing water here and there. The surface of the circle glimmered with the faint reflection of a rainbow. “Well, this is it! Hop in, Kumiko!” He spoke the words like it was the most normal occasion in existence as he continued to grin at the lady before him.

Was this kid truly calling all of this stupid? 'Give the kid detention for wasting your time,' Kyuu told her. Kumiko ignored the voice in her mind. The Meowstic inside of her was right, but Conan didn't seem like a student. Could she really give someone who wasn't a student a detention? It didn't make sense.

She heard his mumbling about a kidnapping, and she could feel the anger from Kyuu rising up inside of her. Thankfully, she'd learned to conceal it, but she knew deep down that the Meowstic was not pleased about what she just heard. And neither was she if she was going to be honest with herself. The kid broke into her classroom, he made her show him where a water fountain was, and now he was calling all of this stupid and "the worst kidnapping ever."

He was thankful though, and he was clearly fascinated by the water fountain. Perhaps he came from somewhere where those didn't exist. Were there places like that in this day and age? He was playing with the water now, mentioning that whatever he was doing was faster with an actual waterfall. She could hear Kyuu groan. Her silence had been golden, and now that she knew Conan's true intentions with the water, Kyuu truly did not like where this was going.

But Kumiko watched as the boy made a portal from water, and of course, she was fascinated. All PokeSouls were different, and it was so fascinating to her to see what they could do. Kyuu was less than impressed with this display though, but that was of no surprise to Kumiko. Meowstic were cats, and cats didn't like water; Kyuu was no exception, and she wasn't quiet about it at all.

"Hop in, Kumiko!" Conan said to her. Kyuu groaned again, louder this time than the first.

'Please don't do this to me, Kumiko,' Kyuu begged. 'Not like this, please. You know how much I hate water.'

'I'd rather not waste my time. I've come this far, let's see what this is all about,' Kumiko told the Meowstic.

'You know, on second thought, we don't have to give the kid detention. He seems like a nice boy,' Kyuu said. 'Maybe we can just tell him he did a nice job and... you know, not jump in the portal that's made out of water?'

'I'm jumping in,' Kumiko said. She didn't wait for a response from Kyuu. She just jumped in the portal, with no expectation of where this would lead.

'I hate you!' Kyuu shouted as she jumped in.

Conan smirked at the indecision playing on the young woman’s face. His fingers twitched, soon to grow sore with the weight of water upon his palms, but he savoured the sight before him for as long as he could. “You humans are so crazy,” he thought to himself before a shot of guilt poured into him. “But I guess we’re all kinda crazy, huh?” he mused out loud this time, nodding his head thoughtfully as Kumiko leapt into the portal!

He wasted no time as he spun the water faster on his fingers! What happened next could have easily failed him: but he didn’t have Kumiko here with him this time to teach him how their human waterfalls worked, so failure was no option! When the vibrant ring of water nearly crashed out of control, he threw it upon the floor! Barely balancing upon its axis, the water invited him eagerly, roaring out of control. Conan leapt into it the same second, tucking his knees to his chest and holding his breath!

They surged through the water portal! His eyes burst open with the cool touch, his mouth spread into a grin, Conan kicked his legs through the water. A vortex of bubbles consumed them, shielding their eyes to the waterworld they were sucked through. A variety of EarthWorld-shaking roars caught Conan’s ears and he grinned. With all of his childish motives, he hoped full and damn well the roars and the surge of the water would scare Kumiko. It was like nature playing a joke on her, right? What could have been so bad about that?

After a minute’s journey, the vortex’s pathway ended and spat them up on a small creek that widened to the greater ocean they transversed. Conan bobbed up from the water, his lungs eagerly embracing the air, as he swiped away the water soaking his face. Above them, waves of aurora lights weaved in and out of a golden sky, gentle bubbles kissing the clouds. The dank must of fertile soil and sea life wafted up from the enormous trees stretching their ways up from the riverbeds, as well as the thick seaweed swaying in the calm, crystal-clear waters. Conan kicked his legs as he stayed afloat, forever marveling at the ripples he created that gently dissipated miles away on this wide river. Grinning like a fool, he looked for Kumiko.

“Yo, Kumiko! Whaddya think?” he shouted, his voice interrupting the serene swells of cool air gusting into them. He whipped his head towards a distinct wail: and what he saw was a herde of Walrein, walrus-impersonating Pokemon whose thick blue skin rolled as they dawdled along the creek’s end. Conan pressed two fingers to his mouth, whistling to the Pokemon who lazily looked towards him. Grandeur tusks flinched slightly as they clapped their hands together, slowly wading back into the water to reach them.

“Here, climb one,” Conan said to Kumiko. “There’s somewhere we want to show you, the reason why we brought you here.” A Walrein dipped its mighty body into the water so that Conan could board it, but not before slapping him in the face playfully with its fin!

They weren't in the portal for long, maybe a minute tops, but the whole time they were, Kyuu's voice rang through her mind. All sorts of profanity spewed from the Meowstic. It was like the filter Kyuu had on had dissolved the moment they entered the portal. It wasn't the first time Kumiko had heard Kyuu with her filter off, and today certainly wouldn't be the last.

As they came out of the portal, they landed in a stream, or rather underwater in the stream. She swam up to the surface and took in a breath of air. Kyuu hadn't stopped cursing (and probably wouldn't until Kumiko told her to shut up), and Kumiko could feel the headache coming on. "Shut up," she told Kyuu. "I get it, you don't like water."

The Meowstic immediately shut her mouth. She could hear the frustration in Kumiko's voice, and Kyuu respected Kumiko enough to know when to shut up and when to keep going on.

With Kyuu's mouth closed, Kumiko took a moment to take in the sights as she used her legs and arms to stay floating. It had been a while since she'd gone swimming (the last time she could remember was when she was back home with her family, before Kyuu had come into her life), but thankfully she hadn't forgot. The sights were beautiful though. The sky was golden, but she could see an aurora weaving between the clouds. She could see trees surrounding them. It smelled very much like a stream would smell, and yet it was a familiar scent, one that brought up childhood memories that she hadn't thought about in years since she'd embraced her new life many years ago.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Conan's voice, and she wasn't sure if she should be grateful or not that he brought her out of remembering something that she couldn't figure out if it was painful or not. Regardless, those were thoughts for later. "It's beautiful," she replied softly. "I like it here."

A distinct wail made Kumiko turn in the direction it had come from. She could see Pokemon, Walrein, coming their way. She'd never seen one in person. She'd always seen pictures or PokeSouls, but never a real Walrein. This truly was a fascinating experience. The headache Kyuu gave her truly was worth it now to see such a beautiful and majestic Pokemon.

Conan boarded one of the Walrein, who dipped its body into the water so the boy could climb on. Another had done the same for Kumiko, and as she swam over to it, the Pokemon splashed water onto her with its fin. She could feel Kyuu's anger rise up in her from the playful act, but she suppressed her PokeSoul; it was an innocent act of play, nothing to get worked up over. She was sure her eyes had taken on a purple tint in the moment, and that tint likely wouldn't go away anytime soon. Just because she'd suppressed Kyuu from taking full control didn't mean she wasn't going to make her presence hidden.

"Just relax, Kyuu," Kumiko told the PokeSoul as she climbed onto the Walrein's back. "It was an innocent act of play. You don't need to get mad at it. Besides, we're here on some sort of mission. You might want to save your energy for in case something goes wrong and we get into some sort of trouble."

'Point taken,' Kyuu replied, though it was after a moment of silence, as if she had to think about her actions. 'I'm still not happy about it though.'

"Are you ever happy?" Kumiko asked. She wasn't expecting a response, and she certainly wasn't going to get one as Kyuu only huffed at her. With the Meowstic quiet again and now that she was on the Walrein's back, Kumiko brought her attention back to Conan. "Alright, lead the way. Take me to whatever it is you want to show me."
